Red face gastic v's lap band

Thank you every one for a warm welcome, I have tons of questions most of which will probably be answers when I go to the doctor next week, but I biggest one is , the weight loss expectations between gastric and lap-band. I am concerned about the loose skin after weight loss, is it more controlled in lap band then gastric. This is one of my biggest worries about doing this.
Have a great day
Teresa

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

The initial loss with lap band is slower than bypass. Over the years, it does seem to even out, but if you have a lot to lose, then lap band is inferior when it comes to total weight loss. If you have type 2 diabetes, then the resolution rate of that is clearly different with lap band and bypass, the result being a little over 50% of the diabetic patients with lap band, and over 80% with bypass.

You may have excess skin, but you should consider which type by how it will affect/improve your health. In many cases, how much total weight you need to lose will influence which type of surgery is best for you.

Check out the Types of Weight Loss Surgery forum, there are a few thread there on the comparison between band and bypass. Also check out the specific forums for Lap Band and Bypass.

I don't think the type of procedure matters regarding loose skin, it's dependant on how much you lose and how elastic your skin is. I see you want to lose 184 pounds. If you lose that much, you ARE going to have loose skin.

My surgeon said I'd lose 60 - 80 % of my excess weight with bypass, and only 40 - 60% with the band. Excess weight is "how much you weigh minus what the weight charts say you should weigh". But ask your surgeon.

I agree with what barbie said. Weight is weight and once you loose alot of weight there is gonna be loose skin. Knock on wood my experience has been great and my skin has not been too bad. dont get me wrong I would love a tummy tuck and some fixes in other areas but for now I can live with it. Good luck on your journey. do lots of research and make the decision that is best for you. I went in to the doctor thinking lap band and came out doing the bypass. Wouldnt change it for nothing. Best thing I ever did.

I think you should do lots and lots of research and decide what the best thing for YOU would be. Nobody can tell you that. Good luck on whatever journey you decide to take.

This is an online seminar for the lap band which should answer some (if not all) of your questions. This surgeon who is giving the seminar has done all of the procedures for the last 20 years and is a member of the ASBMS.

Online Weight loss & Lap-band Video Seminars by Terry L. Simpson, M.D. Phoenix Arizona (AZ)

Surgeons who do the lap band claim that not many of their lap band patients require a plastic surgeon after completion of weight loss.

Welcome.. you will love it here - great support board!!

I guess I disagree with most people. The slower you lose weight the more your skin can keep up with you. You lose weight slower with the lap band hence you won't have as much sagging skin. This won't be the case for everyone... But I know darn well that I won't really have much sagging skin, if at all, because I'm losing my weight so slowly after WLS (granted, I had a clinical trial but the weight loss is being compared to that of the band, not bypass).

Sagging skin shouldn't be one of the main reasons you choose one procedure over another, however. For me, the lap band freaked me out with the idea of putting something foreign in my body and then having to get the injections to make it tighter and smaller. Good luck!

Lose it fast or lose it slow- skin only has so much elasticity to bounce back. Your skin may not look as saggy if you lose 60 pounds with lap band vs 100 with bypass, but that is a weight issue, not skin. (in my "not a Dr." opinion!)

You just have to decide what is most important to you, how much you have to lose, and what the health issues are you want resolved. For me, the skin is worth the 115 pounds I have lost so far!

Good luck on your journey!
