| The 5 Years Requirement
So, I'm in the process of seeking RNY. I meet all of the requirements except for one thing... I'm concerned about the requirement to have been obese for five years. I have been obese for 5+ years, but I'm concerned about being able to prove it medically. Whenever I had a cold or what have you in college they never weighed me. I know I was 290 pounds in 2003 but I don't know how to prove it.
Did anyone else have this problem? Were you able to get around it? My doctor's office promised me they'll do everything in their power to get me approved, but my insurance company said they have never approved anyone without proof of the five year history.
Thanks for your advice and help!

I had the same problem but i remember that I had seen another dr at about the 5 year mark and sent for the record of that wt. It was just one pound over what the lowest wt could be but it worked. good luck I sure hope you can find something that will work.

I think I remember just about a week or so ago someone here saying they had had the same issue and had provided pictures, and that their primary helped them out a lot with a letter (?). More should be on with ideas soon - good luck!

Yes I had the same problem. I was never one to visit the doctor. But my surgeons office told me to gather photos from the missing years that were dated on the back and also write a heart felt letter to send in with what little proof I had to the insurance company telling them why I had sent the photos and why I felt I needed the surgery. It worked and my insurance company had approved my surgery less than 1 week after the documents were submitted. The surgeons office was shocked at how quick I had gotten approval. (By the way, you will not get the photos back)
Hope this helps you. Good Luck!!

Thanks for the tips; I definitely have a ton of pics- it was college! I remember how much I weighed from weighing myself at home, so hopefully that will help. I can document tons of stories and provide many pictures (hopefully they'll take copies! I'll have to figure that out; I have digital pics from that time period, too, though). I am glad to hear that other people found ways to get past this requirement.
Btw, do any of you know whether the weight five+ years ago has to be a BMI of over 35 or of over 40? The lady from my insurance (Blue Cross Blue Shield, though it's Premera Blue Cross locally) didn't know and I figured I'd just worry about that after I got the old medical records. I am pretty sure I can prove that I was over 35 five or more years back but I am not as certain about 40.
Thanks!!
