Default Upper GI

I had an upper GI done for my pre admission testing. I am just telling people so they can be prepared if you have a sensitive tummies. They make you drink this stuff that is thick and chalky but the worse was the pop rocks with water. I don't know about anyone else but the taste stays with you all day. I was burping for hours and it gave me diarrhea.

Don't get my wrong it is all well worth it. I can not wait until my surgery day.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

The double contrast radiography. The chalky stuff is barium, and that isn't what gave you diarrhea, actually, you probably were given a laxative after the fact. Anyhow, you don't want the barium to harden and block you up, that's much much much much more worse than frequent visits to the bathroom for a day or so.
Didn't they give you flavored barium? Here, it's flavored so I haven't heard complaints in a long time
One more hurdle cleared and one day closer to your goal

Yes you must have had barium to drink. The endoscopys that just check the tummys aka little light just run down dont require that. They must have done much more than just the endoscopy for just the tummy. I have to ask did they put you to sleep or just make you drink it and then have xrays done?

I think it was just a Upper GI. I was not put to sleep. I felt nauseated all day and the diarrhea. I don't think they gave me a laxative. Doc, what is the pop rocks like stuff they make you put in your mouth then drink a very small glass of water? (I am just curious) Also Doc it could have been flavored but I could not tell. It was just bad, lol.

The *pop* is to produce gas yup, gas.
This is called double contrast radiography. The stomach membrane is coated with barium, then it is filled with air (the pop pill) so the membranes can be seen clearly. It probably isn't that popular in the US, but here, stomach cancer has long had the highest mortalily of all cancers, so it's a popular method for stomach screening. Of course, a lot of endoscopy is done too, but endoscopies have to be performed by drs, while radiography can be done by radiology techs. So, as a screening method, it works well for screenings done en masse.
Either the barium or the pop may have been laced with a laxative. Unless you are allergic to one or the other, most people get packed up, rather than a wild release.

I did upper GIs for years, as a radiographer (I am the one that hands over the cup and takes the pix. the radiologist is the doctor that comes in and out and barks random orders. lol).

I have a post-op friend who was "forced" to take the pop-rocks when she was complaining of abdominal pain and forgot (???) to tell anyone she was 3 years post op RNY! Let's put it this way...it took a LOT of cleanup to take care of all the barium spewed all over the room. LOL (yes, I have a sense of humor about such things...it is an emotional buffer thing). The lesson...make sure the radiologist and radiographer, and heck...your PCP...knows exactly what RNY is and what you physically can and cannot do.

I had a "gastrografin" upper gi (without the "fizzies") about 18 hours post op to check for leaks. I was too stoned to really care what they were doing or to watch. Gastrografin is a brand name for an iodine-based (NOT BARIUM) drinkable contrast media that can be absorbed, since barium cannot be absorbed.

When I was getting ready, they gave me a chocolate barium milkshake (still was pretty nasty - you can put perfume on a pig, but it won't smell like a flower!! ) and did the fluoroscope thing. I got to watch the stuff go down, swirl around, and do other things I'm not qualified to analyze. I never have enjoyed that, so I was glad it was done. Then it was just a matter of mining all that gypsum out after it set up in there (but that story is best left for another time!! )

Unpleasant as it was, I'm glad you survived!!
