Just wanted to let you know MSmom, that I am with you. I am approx 360 pounds and I decided that I was going to have the imaginary gastric bypass and act as if I had. I restrict myself to a small amount of food and eat the same foods my cousin does (who had the surgery 16 months ago.)
I feel so much better and I have done it now almost two weeks. I have no more heartburn at night. I can breath while sitting in my chair. I mentally feel thinner. I have a long way to go appearence wise, but hey...I am on that road.
My insurance will not consider the surgery and it is not an option for me. I am having to do this entirely on my own. I eat three times a day and I measure my food. I don't snack, I limit my breads, switched to wheat. I eat more veggies and fruits. I limit myself to a diet pop only on weekends, which is 2 a day. I have noticed small changes, which can lead to bigger changes.
I am not dieting.....I am making a life style change. Diet seems so "short term", I am in it for the LONG RUN, for LIFE. I don't want a short term loss, I want a lifetime! I am the first to admit that I hate exercise! I have to fit it into my routine, I have to make time for it and I just literally hate to do that.
I do have a two mile walk video, by Leslie Sansone, and it is rather easy to do. A mile is 2000 steps, and it takes 20 mins, 18 mins to do. I can surely fit that into my schedule in order to prolong my life......
About your Dr. and her 10,000 step theory. I don't know of anyone that weighs 350 pounds that can jump into a 5 mile walk a day. Sounds like to me that she don't want you to have the surgery. Perhaps when the weight falls off you, you could do her 5 mile walk, however strap on 100 pounds of potatoes on her and see how far she walks her 5 miles.
Good Luck.
Remember, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Keep me updated on your diet.. I need all the suggestions I can get.
