Default Dissapointing Appointment

So today I had three appointments. The first one was with the surgeon. He gave me an overall positive evalutation. He did find some kind of nodule on my thyroid that he wants me to have checked out. So that has me a bit concerned. Otherwise he put my nerves at ease in regards to the surgery and my weight. He said I'm young and my blood results looked great so he has no reason to worry. He said that he should be able to do it laproscopically as well. So all in all good news. The surgeon also put me on a very strict diet and also requested I start taking a bunch of vitamins immediately (multi-vitamin, B-12, vitamin C, and B complex vitamin).

Then I met with the internist. He said he could NOT clear me for surgery. He said that until I can do 45 minutes of aerobic exercise a day 4-5 days a week then he cannot clear me. I was wondering what happens to all the people that can't do that due to their weight. I was a little peeved and I know it is in my best interest but did not expect that. He said I could send him a fax in 3 weeks to say I can do it and then he will clear me. So I need to find some aerobic exercise. Today I did some walking and my knee is throbbing so much and pain killers aren't helping. It is really bad. I'm thinking maybe I can also play wii sports and although I play sitting down I definitely get my heart going and can break into a sweat.

The last appointment was my psych evalutation which was a piece of cake. I was cleared for surgery with her. So overall not a horrible day but just so bummed. Not to mention my knee pain doesn't help and just frustrates me.

Anyhow... needed to vent about my dissapointment

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Have you tried pool exercise--water areobics? You may feel uncomfy about getting into a swim suit, but exercise in water works best for those who have a lot of weight, because water helps disperse the weight and makes it easier on you back, knee and feet. Just walking in waist deep water helps.

Hi there im Vickie. Im gonna totally agree with Doc on this one. This is why not only because she is a Dr....... I to suffer from a very bad knee. Water excersies is the only way I can work out per say with out making my knee worse unless i walk on a absolutly flat surface and I do have a letter from my ortho Dr that is permenant stating just that .....that is all im allowed to walk on for any thing. No more than 3 steps. I just now..... found a pool close acutally it just opened with a theapry pool. I just have to pay 4 bucks each time I go in and do my own excersies stay as long as I want and leave. Its great. Hey I live inthe middle of no where also. I go 3 days a week into town so im not making a extra trip either. Its the best way to do it without hurting your knee honey trust me on this....... im in pain management with my knee .

Sorry to hear the news, but maybe the dr has a valid point. It is your health.
I agree with pool therapy. Wear shorts and a top if you don't want to wear a suit.
Walk the length of the pool if you don't want to swim but movement is good.
Have you considered a stationary bike? It might build up your stamina for other more active exercise. (I walk the mall.If you need to sit there are a lot of benches.)
Some hospitals have medically superivsed health centers/gyms now. If you have one nearby it could help you.
Good luck.Keep sharing.

I agree with water aerobics! It has much less impact on your joints. My mom has terrible Rheumatoid Arthritis and is able to do water aerobics and loves it with minimal pain. Good luck on your journey and getting that final approval.

Yes wate aerobics is an option BUT I need to find somewhere that has a ramp. I just can't do stairs in a pool (that is how bad my knee is). I also need to find a heated pool because the cold makes my knee ache more. So now I have to buy a bathing suit because I don't own one and then I have to find a pool. It will probably take 3 weeks just to do all that. That is why I have opted for the wii for now. I have been diagnosed with arthritis in my knee but also think there is something more going on. I have a doctor appointment in a few weeks. I already know the doctor request surgery for my knee until I have some weight off (as I have been told already many times) but the pain is horrendous. So my surgeon wants me off ibuprofen so I will find out from my doctor some kind of pain pills he can perscribe. Hopefully they work better than ibuprofen because it isn't working that great.

So in the meantime I am doing the wii sitting down. I didn't do it last night as I fell asleep early but the night before I did it and woke up yesterday with really sore arms. So I am working something. I will try to step it up a notch next time and do some boxing which is a really big work out for my arms & my heart. I'm going to try the bike that I have here at home but really think that my knee is going to yell at me. If it hurts it I will stop for sure.

Does the doctor have a valid point? I mean I am sure he does. But to tell me to give it 3 weeks and then fax him stating I've been doing it and he will clear me just doesn't make sense. No, he isn't going to test me. He is just taking my word for it. Why not clear me and tell me I must do the exercises because it won't be another 4-5 weeks until I get a surgery date and that date, from what I hear, is 2-3 months from that point. So you are looking at 3-4 months until surgery. Is an extra 3 weeks going to make that big of a difference? He said my EKG was fine and everything else was fine. I dunno... it just frustrates me.

Not to mention I am on a diet that is making me grouchy. I know I am having food withdrawals and having boughts of depression missing those foods. This is my surgeons diet. It is the lack of carbs that I think I am missing. I am also missing snacking. When I snack it would be yougurt, sugar free jello, fruits, veggies, cheese, etc., but no more of that. He said to have a protein shake for breakfast, then lunch & dinner and no snacking not even if it is a piece of fruit or veggies. Then he said no bread, pasta, tortillas, chips or crackers. I've done a liquid diet before but it wasn't completely liquid. This feels much tougher for some reason. I guess it is just having my body get used to it and letting go of the food for comfort.

Unhappy Hmmmmm

I agree with the perfessor!!! Hmmmm is just what I was thinking! Just 3 weeks and all it takes is a fax from you to approve it? I was a little ticked off at all the hoops I have had to jump through, but I have had to have written, documented proof of EVERYTHING I have been told to do. Because of all the strictness, my mindset is now ready for surgery, even though I was hesitant at first, and thought I would be able to have my surgery like 2 days after I went to the informational meeting. But just a fax from you...I would be questioning THAT part of it alone; but I guess it's just different doctors on different days, huh? But I have completely given myself over to my bariatric team; they know what they are talking about; I'm just along for the ride. Maybe your internal md is just shuffling paperwork? I would go for the pool exercise, or just walking. It has taken me a month to just work up to a mile walking on the treadmill. But I couldn't walk to the mailbox and back 3 months. Every little step helps. But please don't cheat yourself out of this opportunity. If you do nothing, and then fax your doc saying you did, it will come back to bite you in the butt! I know, I tried that at first, but my nutritionist was onto me like flies on crap. I pray all goes well with you!
