Question Does anyone have Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield?

I started my paperwork for bypass surgery

My DR said it should be "EASY" for me to get approved--- based on the fact that I am 40+ BMI and have documented history of past weightloss efforts.

But I am worried I won't get approved...

Many ppl on this forum are having approval issues, and it seems by what they say, that they have conditions due to obesity (that I don't have) that in my mind, makes approving the surgery a no brainer!

This documented "history" is MY documenting my efforts, it is not a DR's documentation. I have no (at the moment) medical conditions due to my obesity-- (but that will change I'm sure if I don't get the surgery.) I truly just eat way to o much

So this makes me worry that simply having a high BMI won't be enough and I'm getting my hopes up for nothing.

Also, I did/do not have a documented 6 month-1 year DR supervised diet plan either. Though my PCP will supply a letter that he recommeds the surgery.

So I'm wondering, how "easy" is it using this insurance company? Actually it is the Gov't/Federal plan, which also provides out of network coverage.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

dont worry. i have bc/bs. they approved me in under a week. It all depends though. The plan is what matters not the brand of insurance. You could give them a call directly and find out if your plan covers WLS. if they say yes then your dr will take care of the rest.

I echo what kenyar said I have two different bc/bs plans one of them approved the surgery the other one required further documentation of diet history and ultimately denied surgery request. so it depends on the plan not the type of insurance.

I have BSBC ppo and my approval was a piece of cake.
AHMADS staff handled it all!!!
WAS a wonderful experience.
THEY know which insruances are the easiest
to get approved.
RELAX and you will be approved but usually after
you go see all the required pre op speicailists....
pulmonmary, pscy evaluations, gall bladder sonogram
and all that stuff just to name a few.......
once that is in their hands and submitted it i was
approved within 2 weeks.
I never called the insurance company once left it
all in the capable staff at Dr. AHMAds office.

I Also Have Bc/bs And Like Kenyar Said It Depends On The Contract Your Company Has With Them. Leave It In The Hands Of The Staff At The Doctors Office They Know What They Are Doing, I Know The Staff At My Doctors Office Are Great With Dealing With Ins Companies. But Like You Im Also Parinoid I Wont Get Approved Even Though I Was Already Told My Plan Is Very Easy With Approvals. I Still Worry.

Also What Every Your Contract Requires For You To Get Approved Have Your Doctors Office Try And WRiTE You A Letter That Fits That Criteria If They Will. I Know My Doctor Will Pretty Much Right What Ever I Tell Him. Lol

I HAVE MY INSURANCE THRU MY HUSBAND'S JOB. HE IS A SUFFOLK COUNTY COP. I WAS TOLD THAT SUFFOLK COUNTY HAS ONE OF THE BEST CONTRACTS WITH EMPIRE. I FOUND OUT TO BE APPROVED MY DR HAS TO WRITE A LETTER THAT I HAVE FAILED AT DIETS FOR THE LAST 6 MONTHS, BE CHECKED OUT BY A PHYSCOLOGIST, NUTRITIONST, ETC. AND THATS IT. THEY USUALLY ARE FAST WITH THE APPROVALS I ALSO HEARD

Keep Us Posted !!!

Honey if you really wanna know....... call that 800 number on your card. You having a federal plan may be a great benefit. First thing you ask is... do they pay to have Weight Loss Surgery. Use those exact words. Then if so.....ask what critera you have to meet. That will tell you eveything you will need to know. The Drs offices are pros at this yes. If you wanna know first hand......call and ask.
