| Help: Quitting smoking is harder than I thought
I was suppose to have quit smoking last week and did good for a day, then I went right back to it. I'm only smoking 2 per day but I am laying them down tomorrow and not looking back. I'm afraid that when I go for my pre-op on 7/31, that the nicotine will still be in my system and I won't be able to have surgery, or they will postpone it. Surgery date is 8/13. Do you know if anyone has had their surg. date changed or canceled because the didn't quit smoking when soon enough before surgery? Surely it will be out of my system by 7/31.

OK look. Here's the deal. The longer you put it off the harder it's going to be. Get rid of them tonight.
I dont have info about dates being postponed or what have you, but depending on youe surgeon's demeanor he might straight out refuse to operate on you as opposed to postponing you. They dont like it when you dont follow instruction. It's a leading indicator that you might be a problem post op not following eating instructions/ schedules etc.
I dont mean to be hard on you but you know i've been there. I smoked up to two packs a day for 15 years. The only way to do it s to not put it off, and to live with the withdrawl for a bit. If i can do it, you can too. If this surgery is what you want, and in additional a healthy lifestyle GET RID OF THEM RIGHT NOW!!!!!! You can do it.

ISnt there a new prescription for quitting!
I have heard nothing but good about it
might be worth useing!
I hear some insurances pay for it some dont...
but with the high price of smokes the money saved
on smokes could fund the meds...
good luck i quit a long time ago its not easy

oh yeah, i didnt mean to make it sound like it was easy lol. i fight it especially when stressed out. but you will feel so much better for it. some of the side effects of the scripts leave more to be desired. but how about the patch?? i think the lowest dose might be too much for you if you're only smoking two a day....you can do it.

you might want to look at it like this..... if you cant quit smoking how are you going to follow the rules of the surgery...... i was a 2 pack a day smoker (marlboro reds) now to everyone i was considered a light weight even to my surgeon and he said to me i dont have to do this surgery if your still smokeing even if insurance covers it his reasoning was the surgery is supposed to make you healthy.... plus your under anesthesia for a while......anyway i GAVE away 5 cartons of cigarettes and said i dont smoke anymore..... i just wante the surgery more..........all you have to say is that its not forever and as soon as the surgery is over and you still want to smoke then go for it ...........but for me it was a no brainer..... i have lived by the quote NOTHING TASTES AS GOOD AS THIN FEELS......not even a cigarette.... there are a lot of rules to acheieve success before and after the surgery so if you cant complete this task the surgery rules might be just as hard....... just my thoughts..... i wish you the best luck in whatever you choose....... keep us posted

The new prescription drug is called Chantix and it works fantastically. I smoked for 37 years and was able to just put them aside and forget them taking the Chantix. Your're supposed to take the pills for a week before you quit so you would already be behind the curve, and that's assuming you can get the prescription right away.
Side effects include vivid dreams (not quite nightmares, but ...) and some stomach upset.
Patches might help, but I think the idea is to get the nicotine out of your system and patches work by giving you nicotine transdermally - so it's still in you system. If you are only smoking two cigarettes a day (not two packs right?) then you should probably forget about the patches an just throw them away. You're that close to quitting! Just take that last step.
