My journey
I personally had to attend a weight loss seminar first, then make an appointment to see the surgeon. They had told me at the seminar how to call to see if my insurance covered weight loss surgery at all. At that first visit, I had to submit my insurance information for them to submit for me. I also saw the surgeon for the first time and we discussed what options were available for me (I have lupus), and which procedure would do the best for me. We decided the sleeve gastrectomy would work best for me. Before they could submit my insurance informationf or pre-approval, I had to see the exercise physiologist, and the nutririonist as well as complete a psychological exam. After I had completed these requirements, the doctors office submitted my insurance for approval. It took about three weeks for the final approval to come through. Once that occurred, I was scheduled to see the doctor for my pre-op visit, and I had to go to the hospital as well for blood work, and to attend a bariatric class with the staff at the hospital to understand what would be happening before and after surgery adn to visit the ward I would be on and see the rooms. I was given instructions for the night before (cleansing my stomach contents if you know what I mean ).Then, two days later, I reported to the hospital for my surgery. My surgery took about four hours and I was in the hospital for three days before release. I was on clear liquids in the hospital, then to full liquids when I went home, followed by pureed or fork mashed foods by week three and now I am eating regular foods.Total time elapsed was about six months from seminar to surgery.
Now I am on my journey of weight loss...but that's another story....
