Default WLS and Eating disorders

Ok, I have a question... if you have struggled with an eating disorder such as bulimia in your past, is that something that may affect your ability to have the surgery? I also have ulcers and gall bladder issues... soooo i was wondering.. if anyone has had those problems and had the surgery? I know a fat chick that used to battle bulemia is kind of a "huh??" but it seriously messed up my metabolism and now that I am eating without the purging, my ability to lose weight is seriously hindered. It is just something i was wondering while i put my wls folder together.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Shelbi, I don't think bulimia will prevent you from having surgery, but unless you get to the bottom of what made you go there, it is likely that post op life will be not be easy for you. You may need to think of therapy in that area for better ability to deal with post op life.

I know. I have been working on it since I had my first son and figured out that if i was to have babies what I was doing would harm them.

Shelbi I had Gallbladder issues too before I did the surgery. I had +7 stones. I had open RNY not because of the stones but I wanted to remove the gastric banding, remove the gallbladder and run the bypass.
My surgeon prefered removing the gallbadder with the laporoscopy he said it would be much easier to get it removed this way.
So if I was a normal patient I would have done the gallbadder and the bypass laproscopic. But my case was different.

Good luck, you are pre-op am I right?

Hi Michelle, first of all congratulations on being honest and talking about the bulimia, it cant be an easy thing to do, I agree with doc that you should make sure any issues regarding the bulimia and any underlying issues that may have contributed to it should be sorted through so they don't end up hindering your weightloss journey.

Heidi.... I am soo much further progessed from it... though i still struggle with the idea it will help... i still manage to keep control with a little bit of rationalization that is hasn't done anything but screw up my metabolism, messed up my teeth and created a waaayyy tender gag reflex... lol... after i slow down and think it through i give up the idea and just chalk it up to having to change eating habits not digestive habits *wink*
Doc.. thanks you are amazing to help so many on here... chuppy.. i sooo hear what your talking about.. no stones.. just the excruciating back pain and inability to eat fats... fats and processed sugars are starting to really kill me.. i need to get it out rather soon i think..

Hi Shelbi,
I had my gall bladder removed about 15 years ago, just before they started doing it lap. Oddly enough, I started having problems with it while I was on a weight loss diet and had to have it removed a couple of years later. The surgon gave me 2 stones, one a bit smaller then a golf ball and another the size of a quarter. The same thing happened to a friend of mine after she lost a lot of weight.
Gall bladder attacks are not fun. I agree with Chuppy.

Hmmmm. Haven't heard that one. I mean, there is no direct medical effect that you gain weight after having your gall bladder removed. What probably happens is that what was irritating you is gone now, so you are feeling better and your appetite increases--end result, weight gain.

Yes, gall stones are problems with weight loss. The fat that is being released will be processed through your liver, and and gotten rid of, partly as bile, so it accumilates and solidifies into stones. One of the reasons you need to be careful not to dehydrate. Dehydration causes the concentration of a lot of stuff to go up--causing a lot of trouble.

Don't be scared of this one, I'd say, you could have worse things happen if you keep those stones, they are not , you know.
