A Right Decision.

After reading and reading things written by graduate WLS patients on a sites decided that there are a lot of things that were not real clear to me about the "after" of the gastric bypass surgery.
Yes, I was told that I would have to take a lot of vitamins and minerals. I did not realize that I could be fighting anemia, might need infusions, transfusions, revisions, ulcers from staples, tears, holes, maybe not loss any weight. Diabetics now having hyperglycemia. This non-absorption of vitamins and minerals can be a much bigger thing than I had thought.
I decided to cancel my surgery at this point and feel it is the right decision till I decide what I need to trade off for for what I will gain. Maybe a banding would be better than a gastric by pass for me maybe I should just keep dieting as I am. I am down 37 lbs. and have been able to lower my cholesterol, Tri-glisterites, raise my good cholesterol, so good things are starting to happen.
I will see my personal Doctor and really discuss if surgery is needed. I have about 60 more lbs that I should loss maybe less. I want to improve my health the best way I can.

| | You are the only person who can decide what to do for yourself and your health, so do what you feel is best for you. Incidentally, I think you mean diabetics now having hypoglycemia, not hyperglycemia, as hyperglycemia means high blood sugar, which in diabetics means they stayed diabetic, not, their blood sugar level went down. Drs are all very much aware of the complications that can happen, but also a lot depends on the expertise of the surgeon, and their attention to details. It's best advised that you ask the surgeon of your choice what the rates of each particular complications are. Also, lap band is not necessarily superior to bypass, all surgeries have their pros and cons, all surgeries have their good points and bad points. If you choose surgery, then you need to weigh their differences. You must also keep in mind that the longer the method has been around, more is known about it, and so, more is known about what can happen. With gastric banding, recent research has shown that the possibility of developing acid reflux is relatively high. Also, make no mistake, malabsorbtion of vitamins and minerals can happen with banding too. With vitamins and minerals, another point you need to keep in mind is that quite often, overweight/obese people has one deficiency or another to start with, because their vitamin intake is not enough for the excess weight that they carry. It has been proven in multiple large scale medical studies that even a 5-10% weight loss will improve blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and the lipid levels. The point is to KEEP OFF the weight you lost for the rest of your life. If you can do that, then you are on the right track, whatever method you choose for yourself. (((((((HUGS)))))))) |
