So, I am a 10 ten days out of surgery and 20 lbs lighter. My surgery was on September 28th. I was only in the hospital 2 days and then I came home. Recovery was not fun. I was in such pain that I thought I was dying! The morphine they were usig to try and control it was not effective so it took longer than normal to get it under control. Once in I.C.U. I experienced this incredible back pain. No amount of pain meds would touch it. I was up and walking the night of surgery because I couldnt bear to stay in the bed any longer! I had an amazing nurse who was right by my side the whole night, trying everything in her power to make sure I was comfortable. From ice chips, to back massages, she did it all! God Bless her! They transferred me to the floor the next morning and I pretty much slept for most of the day, getting up here and there to take a walk. I was feeling great. My back was still bothering me but the more I got up the less it hurt. I was able to shower and boy did that make me feel better! It was like night and day! One of the nurses on the floor had a great idea and Im still using it! She suggested hot packs for my back to see if it would help the pain, and it did!! I couldnt believe how much better I felt when I had those on my back! Once I came home, it was a little tough the first couple of days. I have a 2 yr old who wanted to keep lifting my shirt and hugging and kissing my "boo-boo". As cute as it was it was scary not knowing if he would all of a sudden just reach out and grab it or something, lol! He wanted my attention and who could blame him he had been without me for 3 days! Until this I had never left him for more than a couple of hours! My parents were and are wonderful. they have been with me since the day of surgery taking care of everything! Support systems are so important. You dont realize just how much until you are in the situation!
Unfortunately, this past Fri, I went to have my staples removed and see the dr for a check-up and things did not go as planned. He removed the staples and applied something called Benzoin. I had some kind of a reaction to it and 2 days later my incision opened slightly and started to ooze. I went back yesterday to see him. He met me at the office just to make sure I was taken care of even though it was a Sunday. He had to put a wick in to draw out what he called "liquid fat". That wasnt pleasant to say the least. I am sitting here right now with this mound of gauze attached to my belly. It looks like I have some abnormal growth! Something that he told me on my Friday visit was a bit disturbing and relieving as well. While doing the surgery he had taken a biopsy of my liver. The results came back showing marked-to severe fatty infiltrations. He told me that if I had stayed at the weight I was for much longer and not had the surgery chances were that I would have ended up with cirrosis and it wouldnt have been long! So, I guess the surgery was more needed than I had thought!
Well, in the end I am very happy the surgery was done. I am extremely excited about the final outcome and Im happy to be alive! Thanks to all who have given me well wishes and support! I will keep you all posted!
