another day

Posted 09-14-2007 at 08:04 AM by Lch

Well, yesterday was a good day. I recieved a Kuddo's with a hand shake from the President and Vice president of my company, with a check behind it. It made me feel really really good. clothes shopping for me. The speech they gave before they gave me the check was so heartfelt, it actually brought a tear to my eye. I mean they always seem to say nice things to me, but i always think they are being facetious, so it was really nice.
My girls lost their game yesterday, they lost pretty bad, i felt bad for them. they just need to practice, practice, practice.
i had a good friend tell me that she found out her husband is cheating on her, after 12 years of marriage, i feel so bad for her!! but i know exactly what she is going through.
Well, i don't have much more to write about today, more later.
ciao

It's funny how we have such a hard time accepting compliments isn't it? I too always kind of blow off anything positive people say to me, especially when it's on appearance. LOL..maybe that is what my New Year's resolution will be :

just accept the compliments with a smile and QUIT intellectualizing all the darned time!

    LOL

I know I'm kinda getting off track and sorta hijacking Lch's blog, but I just had to make a comment on Bree's comment about accepting compliments.

I was complimented recently by one of my patients that I was pretty, to which I smiled and replied a sincere thank you to her. Now, with me at that time was an administrative staff of our hospital. She didn't say anything at that time, but a few days later, when I was having dinner with some friends including her, she commented on what had passed, and said, "You know, I didn't realize until I saw the way you replied that accepting compliments simply but graciously is the best way to deal with them." Now, in our culture, it's the norm that we say to such comments, "Oh, no, you are being overly kind, I am nothing like you say" or something like that--anyway, humility is the rule.
Well, some years ago, CraigT complimented me, to which I replied the way I was supposed to per Japanese manners. To which, he got mad at me, and said, "Well, I sincerely mean it, so why do you say such a thing?!" I suddenly realized then that to decline a compliment was actually an insult to that person, as it would mean I didn't agree with his/her taste, and also doubted that person's sincerity. So, I replied, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean that way, I said so just out of habit from Japanese manners. Thank you for your compliment." to which he said, "That's what I wanted to hear (my thank you)"

So, difficult as it might be for you to accept compliments, it might help you to think that if the person is sincere, then not accepting the compliments simply and graciously can acutally be rude and an insult, and if you can see things that way, you'll be able to say, "Thank you" very simply, and leave it at that. Even if the person wasn't sincere, a simple and gracious thank you will take the edge out of the comment, it's the same as "kill 'em with kindness" stuff.
