I just had my appointment with the NP. Physiological Evaluation and Psychiatrist and all the others, the good news was I am now ready to move on to the next step. Now I have to decide between the Sleeve and Gastric Bypass. I am having problems deciding. Please share with me your opinions about why you chose what you chose.

Well to be honest I went in thinking I wanted the band. Had surgeon talk me into the RNY and I am happy about that. That was the only two choices for me. Now there are many surgeons doing the sleeve. I would have studied it to see if it might have been right for me. I do not regret having the RNY. It has changed my life for the better. Good luck on what ever you decide.

| Hello and welcome to RR.
I had RNY because my doctor suggested it would be the better route for me since I had so much to lose, so that's how I chose, never have regretted it.
Good luck to you as you begin this journey. |

Greetings.....I have had the same experience as dixieladybug and nell. I thought that the band was what I would want, but went with bypass after learning more. I have only heard a little about the sleeve. Where I live, many insurances don't cover sleeve yet. The doctor had good things to say about it at the initial seminar. Congratulations....wish you the best. I have not been sorry for one minute.

I considered the sleeve but went with the RNY simply because it's been around a lot longer, so I felt better about its track record. Plus, some friends of mine have had the RNY so I felt like I knew better what to expect with it all. But both seem equally effective from what I've read here on this forum.

beltfortune we were actually just talking about this in another thread the other day. I went with bypass, you loose weight faster, it provides a more structured plan, and doesn't have the temptation of multiple adjustments of the band. As for the sleeve, I personally cannot see positive to it. It used to be Step 1 of gastric bypass for the severely obese to get under 500 pounds and then have Step 2 traditional bypass done but it has recently in the past couple years become a stand along procedure. It is the slowest of the three choices to loose weight and of the three it is the only one NOT REVERSIBLE should something go wrong. As another member pointed out, the cut away and discard 1/2 your stomach. Its in the trash. Gone. If something happens you can't get that back whereas they can remove or deinflate the band and then can reverse gastric bypass.

My story is the same as Dixie's. I wanted the lap band and my doc recommended RNY. It has been a great choice for me. Welcome to RR.

I had my surgery this past monday and was home by Wed. I decided on RNY. The main reason is that I was told that the band can slip or need to be reinflated later. The RNY is truly a miracle. No more food cravings or blood pressure medications. Also my diabetes has been reversed.
