So if birth control pills don't work post-op, and getting pregnant is a major NO NO for at least 18 months, but fertility is up...What's everyone doing to be extra safe? I would imagine abstinance the first month or two, but...?

My bariatric support group stresses this every month to women of child bearing age. Be careful, your hormones are extra active as you lose weight. They recommend using 2 forms of birth control at the same time (pills, condoms, IUD's, etc.) to prevent pregnancy during the first two years post op. It's very upsetting to some women to go through WLS surgery, and then get pregnant a few months later. It delays the weight loss process for at least 9 months, and loosing the extra weight from pregnancy is added pressure to this weight loss process.

I just read an article that said birth control pills is recommended after surgery...
“It’s absolutely imperative that they not get pregnant for the first year after the surgery, and we prefer that they wait two years,” Scarborough warns. “That’s the time of greatest weight loss and the greatest stress on the body.”
During that time, Pamela Berens, M.D., associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the UT Medical School at Houston, recommends birth control pills or a contraceptive vaginal ring. She advises against Depo-Provera, a three-month shot that may promote weight gain.
So, I am guessing the pill is okay?

Pill is condsidered OK by my support group and the surgeon. Just that 2 forms of birth control are preferred to MAKE SURE pregnancy doesn't occur in first 2 years. Another reason is that the baby will take extra nutrition away from the mom during the time when the major weight loss occurs. Extra precaution is also to prevent possible harm to fetus from malnutrition during development.

If losing weight is suppose to make a woman more fertile, I am in huge trouble. All I have to do is think about getting pregnant and it happens. Amazing... I will have to use every known form of birth control, or just get my tubes tied... that is just great!
