Default Hormones

Doc mentioned in another thread that you have crazy hormones in rapid weight loss....but I have a question...

I don't have to worry about contraception...I had a hysterectomy 8 years ago....but I am on HRT (hormone replacement therapy)....and I'm wondering if I should slack the dosage back? I'm seeing my GYNO in a few months and WILL talk to him about it, but are there any statistics for those of us who DO not produce typical hormones due to surgical menopause?

Just curious...I haven't had any hot flashes in months...and I don't want to take any more medication than necessary...PLUS, I still smoke some, and that's not a good mixture with estrogen...I'm on ESTRATEST...1.25mg of premarin mixed with a non-medicinal dosage of testosterone....my doc said even at this level, I get LESS estrogen than an ovulating woman; however, I know less is better (but there's something to be said about quality of life...my kids call my hormones my happy pills!)

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Personally, I think you should ask your gyno, maybe tested for estrogen level. If it is high enough, it's possible you could wean off HRT, but once your weight stabilizes, your estrogen level should go down again, so, it's probably better to have concrete data to back up your therapy/going off/maybe or maybe not starting up again.

Incidentally, in regards to HRT, I hope you are aware that an extensive long term study that was going on, was cut short at a year an a half, a couple of years ago, because of the increased rate of certain cancers, and the present recommendation is continue it only for 6 months.

I've been on HRT for 8 years now...basically because of my age (I was 35 when I had the hysterectomy).....bone density at 40 looked great...won't have another one until I'm 50...and of course, I continue to have mammograms...especially after the scare last fall....

I will tell you that after my wls, my periods went haywire!! I was ALWAYS on time but I became late, not at all, heavy, you name it ... I had it!! My GYNE tested me twice for endometriosis and did a D&C and put me on hormones to regulate. Well...HRT was like the pill from HELL!!!! I was Satan himself on them!!!! So, I decided to go off and after I came to a stand still weight wise, my hot flashes went away, so did the breast tenderness. I'm not taking anything right now! I don't trust that stuff anymore!!!!

see...that's the thing...I haven't had a period in 8 years....this is HRT to replace what the ovaries (who were donated to science) were providing, but no longer can....My hysterectomy was radical....and I'm a wreck WITHOUT the pills....(commercials can make me cry when I don't take them LOL)

I was just curious...if you area already minus hormones & take pills to provide that missing piece...and this surgery makes hormones go crazy...are there any studies/statistics on this surgery and how it impacts HRT?

After my historectomy in 1993 I was on hormone pills and I got so sick from them and my doctor tried different kinds, I think I tried about 4 or so different kinds and I was so sick from one of the kind that I was in bed for a few hours from being so sick and then did not feel right from the other pills and I just said no more and I went completly off the hormone pills and I feel so much better. I have not taken any hormone pills since. I hated how they made me feel.

Kath, I had a total Hysterectomy in 1982 at the age of 32. I am still taking HRT pills! I discussed this in detail with my doctor, I am aware of the cancer dangers. I chose to stay on them because I feel better on them as you do. My family also calls them my "Happy Pills", in fact if ever I run out of them my husband RUNS to the pharmacy and WAITS for the refill!! LOL I am on the lowest dose of pills, I do fine. But then again I am 57 yrs old. Talk it over with your doctor then do what is best for you, and continue with your mammograms yearly.

Thanks Diane...I'm going to talk to the doc sometime this summer...but as for now, I'm still taking them....though, since dumping the weight, the night sweats and hot flashes have stopped completely....I would really like to drop the dosage down, if I can....I HATE to cut them out completely....I'm only 42 and I don't want the adverse side effects of NOT taking them...DDH & I are still very active sexually, and I'm afraid of the emotional instability and vaginal dryness etc...

I to had a radical hysterctomy when I was 29 and have been on HRT for 11 years. I was also curious about taking them for a long time and if I would have to continue all my life as well. I will have to talk to my gyno.

Kath, I laughed when you said you cried watching commercials--I am the same way.
I agree about dryness problems (sorry fellows) however there are alot of good products out there that help. I always say I'll probably on them for life!!
