Default Smoking

I smoked for over 25 years. Started when I was in my early teens and finally quit in 1999. It was the HARDEST thing I've ever done. It was absolutely drug withdrawal and it took me several weeks to get through the first stage and that was the 5th or 6th time I had tried to quit. I also gained 50 lbs or more because I quit and that's what brought me to WLS but you know, even if it meant I had to carry around that extra weight for the rest of my life, I would still have chosen quitting smoking. I smell better. Food tastes better. Life is better. I thank God that I did find WLS and that I have lost the weight on top of quitting smoking -- so to all of you who still smoke -- I know how hard it is, but it is so worth it for your life and your family to think again about quitting. There are new drugs on the market that can help you through the withdrawals -- and if you can beat the old weight demon -- you certainly can kick the cigarette demon out of your life for good! So go for it -- you've got a life to live!

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I smoked for several years too, but thank the Lord, I overcame the habit in 1995!!
It is a bad habit to have and can take years off your life. The combination of that and the obesity is just a double whammy. Thankfully I am kicking the food habit too. I encourage all of you who still smoke to make an effort to quit. You took one step for healthiness by having or considering surgery. Love yourself and your family even more and kick the smoking habit too.

I know this surgery was for my health...and that smoking is NOT the healthy decision....I made my mind up years ago that smoking would NOT rule me...

but the fact of the matter is...I still enjoy it....I go 8-10 hours at work each day WITHOUT smoking...and a pack of cigarettes (mostly because they are SO expensive now) will last me about a week. Everything in moderation, though eventually, I will probably quit....

I had to be smoke free for 3 months before they would even do the surgery. so I smoked for 25 years and have been smoke free for about a year and a half. I am glad I did it as I agree that I smell better. food is the same for me but I still do get cravings once in awhile but will never go back. It was definately one of the hardest things I ever did. Now if my hubby would quit.

I smoked from age 15 till about 10 years ago at age 34. My husband had a hard time quitting, tried a million times in the last 10 years, more so from my nagging then really wanting to, and I think that is the key, you have to want to (I did want to). But the day before my surgery he quit. I think he thought, hell, if she can do this...And quess what - he still hasn't had a smoke, 10 weeks...
Since I quit 10 years ago, I did pass a rule, no smoking in the house (poor guy had been banished to the deck for all these years). But my house, clothes, hair, car...don't stink. I remember washing the walls in our old house after I quit, you don't even realize that they are yellow. And you don't realize that even the clean clothes hanging in your closet smell like smoke.

oh...we haven't smoked in the house since I brought my son home from the hospital 19 years ago.....that keeps me from doing it more often too...I never have time to run outside...or it's too hot or cold etc....

I smoked from around 1969 through 1991. I used a hypnotist to stop smoking, and it worked well for me. My surgeon will not do surgery on anyone that smokes. You have to stop smoking, and remain that way for at least 90 days prior to surgery. Smoking affects the healing from surgery, and that is a primary reason docs don't want their patients to remain smoking past surgery. These days, it saves you buckets of money too.
