I have been thinking about getting an ipod or mp3 player and I don't have much money. What is a good price for a decent one so I know if I'm paying too much? Plus, do you have to buy all the songs from itunes? I have limewire and download songs all the time. Can I use those songs? I mainly want it for the car, so how do those work? Are they worth it? Just a little clueless!

My granddaughter, that lives with us full time, loves her Ipod. She has the bigger one, that holds the most music, but they have several models. If you car radio has an input plug on it, you can plug the Ipod or other players into it, to hear through the car speakers. Otherwise, you'll have to get one of those wireless FM transmitters to send the music to a FM station. These units charge your Ipod at the same time, but tend to cost $50-75 for these units alone. Another option, although more cumbersome, is to get an Ipod docking station for your home, small in size, and take it with you in the car. My granddaughter bought an inverter for her older car cigarette lighter, plugs the inverter into that, and plugs the ipod dock into that. She can now hear the unit through the Ipod docking station. Yes she downloads some music from Internet sites, but most of it is off of CD's loaded onto her computer, and then downloaded to her Ipod.

Thanks Dave. So basically I don't have to buy the music per song, right? I make CD's off the limewire songs and even if I couldn't put those right on the unit, I can make a CD and get them on there that way. And yes I'd have to buy something for my car because it's an '01 and I don't know if they had these back then!

No, but you can if you want. We found it got too expensive to pay per song, so she has gone to Best Buy to get those customized cd's for her favorite songs, brings them home, downloads them to the computer, and then to the Ipod. Or you can use a CD you already have, or buy a new CD you like. If you don't have a plug in your radio, the the FM transmitter would work. Most plug into your accessory plug or cigarette lighter for power, and then into the Ipod. The FM transmitted transmits the signal from the Ipod to an unused FM station, which picks up the signal and plays through your radio speakers. Several different brands are out there, but I'd opt for one that charges the Ipod at the same time. DO NOT drive with those ear buds on, as you'll probably get a ticket if spotted by the local authorities.

I hate ear buds at all!!!! They never stay! That's why I would only use it for the car. Thanks again, now it's time to start bargain shopping!

I have TONS of music from limewire that I've put on my IPOD....(you don't want my IPOD...it was WAY high $$....I told hubby to get the smaller one...but he bought the 16 gig IPOD touch...it's like an Iphone...and while I love it...it's NOT what I would have bought) I take this thing everywhere and it's awesome in the car, but you will need a plug or a transmitter....I make playlists for the gym, my drive to work etc...I know there are a LOT of mp3 players out there now...I'm not sure on brands/$$ etc...I'm sure others will be along for feedback! |

Thanks Kath, that's a relief! When I heard $0.99 a song I was like - WHAT???? But this makes more sense. And so the smaller ones are better then, huh? Ok. I don't need a ton of space, but when I make CD's they get all scratched up and then a new song comes out and you gotta make another one and then you have so many it gets crazy! It would just be nice not to have to deal with it anymore.

oh yeah...you can buy smaller ones...my daughter LOVES her 4 gig NANO...it holds nearly 1000 songs (My IPOD touch holds like 3500 songs!)....the nanos are pretty reasonable....I bought hers on EBAY...but they have a pretty good selection at Walmart for reasonable prices!

I bought an apple ipod for my daughter for around $100 on Ebay. It was well worth the money. Not sure how many songs it holds but she's had it for 1 1/2 yrs and loves it. We used to use limewire but starting having problems with the computer and viruses so we now use frostwire and it seems to be working well. My 5 other kids all have mp3 players and they work well too. Don't hold as much but very user friendly. With the ipod we have to download songs and drag them to another folder in order to to put them on, but the mp3 players just plug in and the songs you choose are downloaded at once. Really a matter of preference and how many songs you want to listen to. Both come in handy. Sometimes I use my oldest sons ipod (his dad bought from the apple store and paid $400 ) when I work out and it makes the time go by quickly. Good luck on whatever you decide to do. Havej a great week-end!
