Default Question about insurance

So, I was reading Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies, which is actually a great book of information. Thanks to you all, I knew a lot of the information.

In the section discussing insurance, they made a comment about if you've just recently switched to a new insurance company, you MAY not be covered for the surgery for awhile because obesity is considered a "pre-existing" condition. That I may have to be on the insurance plan for awhile before being able to get approval for WLS.

DH got a position with a new architectural firm in Feb. and our new insurance BCBS Excellus, was activated Feb. 13. Do you think I should wait? Call the insurance company?? or go to the Informational Seminar and then see if the Dr.s office can tell me whether or not I'll be denied due to new coverage.

TIA

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

My husband took a new job in Arpil of last year. For me, obesity was not a pre-existing condition and I was approved in January, so that was less then 1 yr with the insurance company.

I'm sure all companies are different, just give them a call and ask.

Definately call and ask! You will never know. A lot of the companies allow it if you are a new hire. Check into it. Good Luck!

I know at the seminar I attended, the Doctor had someone there who deals with the insuance companies, so she had all the answers, she knew what company was easy, which was difficult, what you needed to do...maybe call the surgeons office and ask if someone that helps with insurance will be at their seminar.

I also read "weight loss surgery for dummies" very good book, but for some reason people snicker when I say that (?!)

I agree with everyone else. Call your insurance company to find out. Every insurance is different.

Call. It's your right to know what you're covered for and what you aren't. Besides, it'll stop the nagging question in your mind and either put you at ease or let you figure out what you need to do.

If you have not had a lapse in insurance coverage, "preexisting" conditions shouldn't be a problem with most insurance companies. That is part of what HIPAA did for patients!! I would check with your insurance company to be sure.

Keeley is correct! As long as you didnt have a lapse in coverage for more than 90days you should be fine as long as the insurance company covers the surgery to begin with. The others are correct in saying call. Just call the number on the back of the card and ask them if they cover the surgery. Make sure you write everything they tell you down including the persons name.
