Default O/T / Vehicle Safety

Hi, guys! I realized just a few minutes ago what a great source of information our members are - duh!?! I don't think it occurred to me to ask you guys this before because it's totally unrelated to food issues, but I realized we have every walk of life here and an interesting number of EMS and medical staff. Here's the question:

I have a DS that is getting ready to take off driving in the next month or two. We have a choice of two vehicles he can use. The first is a 1990 Chevy Cheyenne which is a full size truck, basic work truck, solidly built and has seatbelts but that's it. It is not listed on the NTSB lists of vehicles tested due to its age, but the closest rated vehicle is the same size and one year newer, it got a ** rating for safety. The second is a 2006 Honda CRV. It gets ***** for front end and side impact ratings, but is smaller, and completely differently engineered. This seems like a no brainer coz of the star rating, but I have talked to mechanics who said they'd put their kid in the Chevy first due to it's bigger, higher off the ground and much better put together. My question is specifically for you folks who work in emergency services. What is your experience? If it was your kid, which would you choose and why? Thank you all so much, your opinion is very important!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

good question. whats the airbag situation on both vehicles? just curious. i would go with the honda for a few reasons.DS is a son right? im not good with the abbreviations LOL!!!

1) he wont feel "invincible" in the honda. the problem with beginning drivers, boys specifically, is that they try to outdo others on the road. also 2) dont trucks roll over? thats why i ask about airbags. im assuming the truck doesnt have those side/ curtain thingues being its a 1990...

i have seen people hurt in all types of cars. to be honest there is way more dependant upon other factors than just the driver. who hit whom, at what speed, if they were belted etc. i would personally put my child in the honda. the name alone says reliability to me. (personal experience of course lol) not sure if any of this helps...

i'd be curious to see what others will say...

I am not a car expert but I would put him in the truck. It is higher off the ground and if he does get in an accident he most likely will be less likely to be seriously injured and also the truck can withstand more of an impact than the Honda CRV. Less damage = money saved

Yep, my son He's so totally careful, we have to tell him to speed up to the speed limit. He's almost 18 and we have had to make him learn to drive and to practice. We're forcing him to learn before he leaves home in the fall! Racing and other such issues arent concerns with this kid. The Honda actually has the higher rollover ratio. It has air bags everywhere I could get them LOL! See, I know about the "crunch" issue that the cars crumple up to absorb the impact and to help the humans not absorb too much impact which is what hurts them - from what I understand. You both made a good point as far as type of accident. The only accidents I've had to date are side impact and hit from behind; none have been bad - thank God! I almost got whacked a few weeks ago (my fault) and it would have been a side impact - my angels were working overtime that day!!!! I dont know....... I know he will always wear his seatbelt, no doubt in my mind there. Thanks!

The chevy is a 4x4 regular size truck. The CRV is a small SUV.

I had a son who drove both cars and trucks and personally I felt better when he was driving the truck, probably cuz it was higher off the ground and if he was to get in to an accident was probably safer in cuz it is bigger. That was my experience.

Why dont you chuck him in both vehicles, and see which he feels better driving? The big wagon, well, its thaat much bigger than a smaller car, so is harder to judge distance etc, but the littler one has airbags etc.

I would see which of the 2 he drives better (and parks better).... boys will be boys though, sounds like he has a good head on his shoulders.
*hugs*

I am a nursing instructor and my home floor is an orthopedic trauma floor. I will tell you that the absolute most important thing is that he needs to wear his seatbelt at all times. I can't tell you the number of patients that we see (teenagers) who were not wearing their seatbelt at the time of their wreck. Other than that, I would pick the Chevy. It is higher up and can take a little more impact. He is also prone to fender benders his first few years of driving and the truck can handle that better. The CRV is definitely a rollover risk. Again, make sure he wears his seatbelt all the time!!!

We put our DS in an old '91 GMC Jimmy, which we bought when I was preg with him.

A random car swiped the Jimmy's parked rear tail light and the car (a honda sedan) was obliterated on the rt. front end. DS's car had a smashed tail light (easily replaced) and a little scratching in the rear bumper/fender. Nothing that a passerby would stop and stare. There were shards of silver plastic all over the street and my front yard, from the Honda.

My recommendation...the truck.

My dad and I told the boy that if he went a year (his 17th bday) with NO infractions, NO fender benders, NO encounters with the sheriff's dept, we would each give him $500. So, on May 1st, I gotta hunt down five bills, but up to right now he has been a safe careful driver for the first year.
