| Doctors suspect a 22-year-old Virginia woman has contracted the human variant of mad cow disease shortly after she had gastric bypass surgery, WAVY-TV reports. Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, which affects roughly one-in-a-million people, is a degenerative and fatal brain disorder has been linked to tainted medical instruments and certain medical procedures, according to the Mayo Clinic. Aretha Vinson’s health began to deteriorate three months ago, just after she had the surgery. First, her motor skills started to go and her memory faded. Now, the Portsmouth, Va., resident lies unconscious in a hospital bed. There is no cure or treatment for the disease. "The pain is just excruciating," said Vinson's mother, Robin. "I feel there's been a part of my life ripped from me." | Yes how would instruments be infected with Mad Cow?? It comes from brain and spinal matter from an infected cow. Perhaps she had it before the surgery and the surgery lowered her resistance and it just took over.

| CJD is not the same thing as mad cow disease. They are both forms of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy. Long term but pretty much means that it can be transmitted and it causes the brain tissue to look like a sponge. CJD can be passed from contaminated surgical instruments if those instruments were used on a patient with CJD and not sterilized properly according the World Health Organization guidelines. According to the CDC website (as of Jan 2007), over 250 cases worldwide had occurred from contamination. However, none since 1976 (I guess until this latest case). If we worried about every possible complication from surgery, no one would ever have surgery. I wonder if they know whether or not surgery had been performed on a known CJD patient recently?? I smell a lawsuit! Sorry if this sounds technical---the nursing instructor in me just won't go away sometimes. (Plus, I have a degree in biology and we learned about this in school) |

| Super Moderator | CJD takes time to develop although the average life span once the symptoms appear is under a year. Immediately after surgery is too soon. She most likely had already contracted it before, and the symptoms seems to have appeared suddenly instead of gradually because of the rapid changes in her weight post op made her and her family notice certain things which they probably thought was due to her excess weight pre op.
