Default Frustrated

Ladies I am so frustrated with my sons teacher. My middle child has Aspergers Syndrome, disorder whatever the heck they are calling it these days, he is Autistic on a high functioning scale. He is often forgetful because of this, you can tell him to do something but within a milisecond he'll forget what it is he was suppose to be doing. I get calls daily on him forgetting his planner or not turning in his homework or him not bringing it home, I am so fed up with hearing this. He has to be reminded and checked double over to make sure he is bringing the stuff home, short of gong to school with him I can NOT make sure he is packing his back pack up after class, it is the schools duty to him to have a helper check him to make sure he is bringing this stuff home, but instead of them getting him a helper I get scolded by his teacher on a daily basis. I am just so fed up, I finally wrote his teacher this note, please tell me if you think it was out of line.

Mrs D,
Thank you for your letter. I am not sure if you are aware but because of William's Aspergers he often times is forgetful. This is legitamit. He can be told to do something and within a minute or two forget what it was he was suppose to be doing, such as, bringing home his planner or packing his homework into his back pack. As much as this happens it does no good to mearly tell him to do it. I reprimand him and scold him but thats not enough. He needs someone to physicaly check that his planner and his homework is being packed in his back pack otherwise I have no control over whether or not it gets home or not. That means if he has no homework or planner in his bag I cant sign it or make him do his homework. Telling him 20 minutes prior to school letting out is not ENOUGH, he needs someone to double check. Thank You
Sincerely
Rebecca S

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Works for me. Simple, to the point. Is he in special ed? I know Asperger's kids are typically smart, but if he's enrolled in special ed you should have a liaison at school that can help educate the teachers Having some knowledge about this, I developed the attitude early on of "It's not a question if the child can learn, the issue is can you teach the child". Have you had a meeting with her? She is aware of his diagnosis, yes? I hate the way they slap labels on people today, but what the heck, use this to his advantage. Good luck!

Clancy he was in special ed but they are trying to acclamate him into mainstreme classes, I have had meetings with her and the special ed team but this teacher just doesnt seem to get that I cant be there with him 24/7 to make sure he brings this stuff home. I guess I am gonna have to call another meeting with the special ed staff and see about getting him back in sped classes...uggghhhh I just hate this part

As a former teacher I think the letter is good- however, you may want to put the part about having someone physically check his backpack at the very end and specify something like "A suggested solution" so the teacher will really hone in on it.

Also- you may have all this but you can request a 504 plan or even an IEP if you don't already have one. In that plan could be something having to do with organization and his planner with specific guidelines for the teacher. These can be used for kids who CAN be mainstreamed, but need a little additional help. (great for testing procedures as well if he needs a quieter environment or more time)

Just some ideas, I am sure it is very frustrating!

Hey, Becka -

I work with kids with Asperger's and you are absolutely correct about them needing to support your son with the organization without harping on him about it. Some of the kids I work with have an end of day schedule or a checklist to make sure they get everything on the way out. Having one often makes the schools feel like the kids are still developing their own organizational skills and that the staff are not doing the work for them. Seems to work for most. I would make sure they are still helping him with it daily, though.

Hope this helps,
Chrisssy

Default my son has the same problem

He has missed recess and had after school detion for forgetting to bring his home work home. He also has a hard time turning in his lunch money. I get nasty phone calls from school and I'll look and its in his book bag. They say its not their job to check his bag. Next year he is switching schools. Just wish I would have done it sooner.
