Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | My family doctor just called to tell me that my labs came back normal, with the exception of an elevated ALT (something to do with my liver). My ALT is 65 (the normal range is between 5-42). Anyway, my doc wants to retest me, so I'll be going back in for bloodwork later this week. Does anyone know what causes an elevated ALT? Should I be concerned? I'll be calling my surgeon tomorrow to see if it could be related to my surgery or eating habits... but if anyone has any experience with this, I'd love to hear from you (I don't want to stay up all night wondering). |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | found this online at this site Alanine transaminase - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia [edit] Clinical significance It is commonly measured clinically as a part of a diagnostic liver function test, to determine liver health. Diagnostically, it is almost always measured in units/litre (U/L). [edit] Elevated levels Significantly elevated levels of ALT often suggest the existence of other medical problems such as alcoholic or viral hepatitis, congestive heart failure, liver damage, biliary duct problems, infectious mononucleosis, or myopathy. For this reason, ALT is commonly used as a way of screening for liver problems. However, elevated levels of ALT do not automatically mean that medical problems exist. Fluctuation of ALT levels is normal over the course of the day, and ALT levels can also increase in response to strenuous physical exercise[1]. When elevated ALT levels are found in the blood, the possible underlying causes can be further narrowed down by measuring other enzymes. For example, elevated ALT levels due to liver-cell damage can be distinguished from biliary duct problems by measuring alkaline phosphatase. Also, myopathy-related ALT levels can be ruled out by measuring creatine kinase enzymes. For years, the American Red Cross used ALT testing as part of the battery of tests to ensure the safety of its blood supply by deferring donors with elevated ALT levels. The intent was to identify donors potentially infected with Hepatitis C ("non-A non-B Hepatitis") because there was no specific test for that disease at the time. With the introduction of second generation ELISA antibody tests for Hepatitis C, the Red Cross changed the ALT policy. As of July 2003, donors previously disqualified for elevated ALT levels and no other reason may be reinstated as donors by contacting the donor counseling department of their regional Red Cross organization[2]. |

| I have had elevated liver enzymes (ALT and AST) before and my liver proved to be a little fatty. However, the next time they were checked...no problems. FYI, Wikipedia is not a reliable source all the time. Anyone can post anything there and they do not have to have an expertise in the area. |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I just got my 3 month labs yesterday and my ALT is also high. Surgeon said this was most likely because I was on Cholesterol meds for so long. He believes the numbers will go down some more at my 6 month labs. If not he will do an Ultrasound of my Gallbalder (which I had pre-op and was fine). He didn't seem too concerned.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Well I can tell you from experience that its possible your liver was giving you a bad day? I was sick one time and they decided to go ahead and do a liver panel on me because i had been taking cholesterol meds and it was time to check it instead of making me come back. My liver panel was off the charts. They made me have it rechecked right away and eveything was normal. If you still have your gallbladder that will make it be elevated somtimes to. Just have it rechecked and see what the dr has to say what he thinks causes it. |

| Super Moderator | ALT at 65 is somewhat high, but not too high. It's in the okay-let's-see-how-it-goes range in daily clinical practice. Do as your dr says and go back for a recheck. If he thinks you need it, have an US or CT done, but in any case, it is not a number that will have the drs immediately running around in a rush. Just make sure that they can figure out the reason for the rise, and that the data will go down.
