| Slim-fast Optima
Hey,
I tried today the slim-fast optima blue berry muffin bar.
Total carb is between 18-20 g if you subtract the sugar alcohol and the fibers, it's a big chunk! I though I would feel foamies or dunmping but so far so good!!!!
Is it OK with our diet?
I searched their web and they have some other neat things.
Please share your feedback.

It seems good, but I can't find any page with the exact listing of the nutritional values and contents, so I can't say for sure. So long as you can get in your protein and nutritents, and keep the fat and carbs as low as possible, I guess it's fine.

DocSanae what is the optimum daily total carb intake cutoff?
I'm eating protiens and vegi's but the carbs I need a number to set my limits.
I used to do 20-25 g carb when I did Atkins, but I had skin problems I had lots of pimples in my face and back!! and also I had the gallbladder stones although they were chronic as the ultra sound specialist diagnosed them.
I need help, some articles says if you eat protien you cannot drop or cut the fat because the Atkins idea cannot work without fat!, low calorie/low fat diet limits the protien and the fat, but with that program I used to be hungry most of the time!! vegie's don't have that full feeling in the stomach!!!I'm lost!!!!!!!!
Thanks for your advice

Hmmmm. Fat 5grams translates into 45 kcals. No protein. And 130 kcals total can add up if you're not careful. If you replace it with other stuff with equivalent nutritional value, you'll be fine, but if you add it to what you are already eating, be careful and keep it to one helping per day. Remember that you need to get your protein in first, so it would be better if you can find stuff that has protein in it.
These things are meant to supplement the diet and keep the calories within preferable range, so, used wisely, and you'll do fine.
Personally, I find that processed food, even those that are supposed to be weight control diet helpers, contain too much fat, so I try to find no fat stuff if possible. That or cook something myself, so I know what exactly I'm eating. (Not that I am always successful. )

Chuppy, I am not really sure Atkins is a good diet, balance wise. At least, it's not the kind of balance that is recommended medically as sound nutritional balance. South Beach seems to be more balanced as far as daily nutritional values go.
The basic requirements for nutritional balance I have written in an article here.
You need at least 130grams of carbs daily because your brain cells can use only carbs for energy, except in very rare situations. The fat you have stored in your body, which it is using now for energy, goes into the fat burning cycle, they aren't changed into carbs, so you have to get the required carbs from your food. Excess carbs are turned into tryglycerides and stored as fat in the body, so you do need to avoid extra carbs, but you do need the minimum amount for your brain cells.
If you can get ahold of a dietician/nutritionist, it would be for the best.
Hope this helps.

Some people think no carbs because they equate them with sugar. Well, chemically speaking, carbs are sugar, yes, but they are actually very complex. What you need to stay away from is refined sugar and stuff that do not have much nutritional value other than as what you normally think of as sugar. You do need "good carbs" such as whole grain stuff, becaue they have fibers as well, and these also include some protein, surpise!
Always take a good look at the lables of processed food. With "junk" food, you'll probably be surprised how much fat as well as carbs they have. Don't forget that calorie-wise, fat is more than twice that of either carbs or portein, when the portion is the same.
The first thing to do, is follow your surgeon's instruction and protocol. That said, when you are early out post op, protein is the priority, because you need it for the body to heal, and also because of the change in your absorption. Your intake is still very limited, so there's not much space for anything other than protein. Later on, when the amount you can eat increases, and your eating stabilizes, you have to slowly bring back into your diet a good balance, while still keeping your protein priority.
Keep in mind that you need all three of the major nutrients and vitamins and minerals along with them. The point is, how much of each.

THE BARS are okay but i personally follow lo CARB high protein for my first year. I have issues with carbs...if i eat to many it triggers more cravings
and eating for me...im a carb addict and I know this.
SO for me i keep my carbs lo...
the carbs i mostly get are from fruits, veggies or whole grain products and then i limit how many i take in from other products....during my more optimum looseing times. IM very sloppy now with them and not looseing.
I think those bars are okay, but for me early out i kept my sugars at 5 grams but now i go up to no more then 10 grams in a product. HONESTLY, you should try to find a bar with similar nutritional label but with a drop more protein!!!
PROTEIN foods always keep us full longer!
I know i use the new improved bars from the mfg of the shake i drink, the Q smart bars from quaker actually have some protein in them....i always try to get something with protein even for a snack or meal replacment bar but thats just me.
