I don't know if this can help anyone but I was looking at this and maybe this could be an option for someone that cannot get approved for surgery. There are several studies that are doing the surgery to track information. Check it out and see if it can be of some help to you or someone you know. I found the list rather interesting.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Thanks for the link, Shelly.

I've checked the deets listed, and basically, you have to be approved by your insurance for the surgery, or you are self paying. Keep in mind that no such study will pick up the bill for the surgery itself, the only bills they will pick up are the extra lab works that are not routine to the procedure. (Can you imagine NIH or other gov organizations picking up all the bills, since that is where most research bills eventually end up--the gov, or some pharm co? )

The objectives of the studies are interesting, though, and I would like to see what results they come up with. The comparative study being done by U.C. Irvine is something Craig asked me a while back to look up when he heard of the ongoing research.

Like I said I wasn't sure of the requirements or if they were covering the surgery. Just thought its a good link to look into for some. It would be nice if they would pick up the bill, it's not like they don't have the money to do that. I work with grants and it's amazing how much money goes to fund these types of research.

Yeah, I know having been on the receiving end of that, occasionally.
However, say, 20K per surgery so how many surgeries can be financed with one grant? And it has to pay for manpower and equipments
and analytical chemmos and all that stuff, too.

Seriously, these studies will help in assessing the efficacy of the surgery, and in searching for methods of prevention and solutions for some of the untoward effects from the surgery, as with the nutrition deficiency study. So, if anyone is interested, then checking them out is not a bad idea.

Right I agree with you 100%. I know about the payments going out and coming in. Definately wouldn't cover the surgery.

But as you said, it would be good for some of us to participate with the studies for long term effects.
