Default Bone Density Scan Results

Well, I got my results back in the mail today from my PCP...and everything was well within the normal limits with the bone and mamogram. I just have to get this done once a year so that he can keep an eye on it. I think that is a really good idea to do the Bone Density scan yearly with a WLS patient.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Really??? Maybe you should inquire about it with your surgeon or PCP. It is now the standard with my surgeons office. I think that it is a great idea since it is the only way to truly see what the calcium is doing.

I'm glad you got a good report! I don't know if my docs office does this either, I'll have to look into that. Or actually I'll look into it in Buffalo - it's getting close now!

Yes, keep up with the bone scans, there are more reports out now that bone loss, unfortunately, can be one of the down sides of weight loss surgery.
Keep up with your VitD, Calcium, and the bone scan.

As doc says, vitamin D is important--especially with calcium absorption. USDA recommendations are too low, especially for wt. loss patients, when it comes do D levels. Articles I've read, and TV science reports indicate current thinking is around 1000 IU of D per day, instead of the 400 IU RDA. Even higher doses of D should be considered with bypass patients. I've battled D levels for the past two years. Labs after surgery indicated a score of 8 on D, when normal limits are considered 30-100. My doc had me do 3 routines of 8 wks. of 1 of the 50K prescription D capsules, and then retest. Best score of 3 tests was a whole 14. 8 month ago, I switched from a pilled vitamin to a liquid vitamin. 2 year labs (done 2 months ago) indicated a 33, not wonderful, but in the low normal levels. I now augment my diet with two of the 500 IU D capsules from Vitalady--in an effort to further increase my D levels. Low D levels lead to a host of health issues. Very good article on D is at Should ‘D’ Stand for ‘Deficiency’? DAVE

Gosh no - men have bones too, lol!!! But seriously, it is mainly a women issue because of our hormones or lack of post menopause. But men can have brittle bones too, it's just not as common with them.
