Lightbulb Learn from my mistake! (Esp newbies!!)

I lost 22 lbs in my first 3 weeks after surgery, I was pretty happy with that. Then I went to pureed foods and didn't really pay too much attention to exactly how much protein I took in. I lived off eggs and cottage cheese, but my weight loss stopped. I was eating very little and I thought the weight would still come off. I didn't gain, but I didn't lose.

I talked to a friend who asked if I was getting enough protein a day (I am suppose to get about 64 grams based on my height and weight), I said no, but that protein was all that I was eating. She told me that I probably wasn't losing weight because I wasn't getting my protein needs met. So, I took her advice and made sure I drank two protein shakes a day that gave me >60 grams and just ate the same as I did before.

Well...I followed her advice since Friday. Over the weekend I went to a casino with my husband. I drank alcohol, I even ate some crackers, but I still made sure to drink my protein shakes every day. I just weighed myself and I FINALLY lost 2 more lbs!! Think of what the weight loss would have been if I had been doing that for the past three weeks!!

The moral of the story for the newbies: GET YOUR MINIMUM PROTEIN NEEDS MET EVERYDAY, you won't be sorry!!

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I'm listening! I must need to go back to having something extra protein wise too - I used to have a 25 gram bullet every day with water, and I haven't in a while and the weight loss is sooooo slow. I comfort myself in that hopefully what they say is true, the slower you lose, the better it stays off...and I did get to the 1/2 way point in 6 months....just. But I was losing better when I was getting in a much higher protein ratio - so, thanks....

You and I had our surgeries on the same date! All I can say is way to go on the weight loss!! You're doing great, and thanks for the tip about the protein. I, unfortunately, haven't been able to get in all of my protein or fluids due to a possible stricture, and so far have only lost about 27 pounds, but I am focusing on the word LOST, in the past it was always gain. Keep up the good work!

Sorry to hear about the stricture. Once you get it fixed and able to get all your nutrients, I am sure the weight will fly off!! I have only lost 24 lbs since the surgery, I lost 18 lbs in the two weeks before surgery, so we are doing about the same! Also, you weighed less than me at the beginning, so it is normal to lose it just a bit slower. Hang in there and I hope you are better real soon.

Thanks, Doreen! I had my UGI today and the doctor said he didn't see a stricture, but gave me copies of my films to take tomorrow when I am supposed to have an endoscopy with balloon dilatation. I want them to make sure there's a stricure before they go dilating anything! LOL If there isn't a stricture, then I'm not sure what my surgeon will say. Sometimes I can tolerate a few teaspoons of food or water just fine, and others I am throwing up. I have tried many foods, and it doesn't seem to make a difference. Maybe I just have a grouchy pouchy right now and need to train it to accept food! I'll keep you posted.

Bullets often have protein in the collagen form, which bypass patients can't absorb because the section of the digestive tract that breaks down collagen for absorbtion is bypassed. So, be sure what form the protein is in, when you choose your protein supplements.
Don't forget to check out the lables first.

Hey you newbies that are postop.....
You dont ever need to say I have "only" lost ever again. That word "only" sounds like its such a small amt. Heck no, you have lost this amount, and be oh so proud of it. I just noticed when I read the post that word stuck to me, as like its only this small amount.
Your doing great with any amount of weight lost. Success is not measured by that scale.....just remember that! You will lose so much weight, and a year from now, will look back, and think, WOW look how I have done, I am a success!
