| Psych Eval is like an oxymoron
Okay.. I got in the sheet that I have to take to my Psych Eval appointment on September 13th from the hospital where I will be having my surgery done, UHC board willing. And as I was faxing this Eval requirement areas that they must have from the Psychologist I got to reading it. I chuckled when I read these requirements only because there was a part that I felt was liken to the definition of oxymoron. Honestly it would probably be the same for all of us, but yet yes I do know that for some it is more towards one way and not both so it would not be a oxymoron for some. (If that makes any sense). So here were the oxymorons for me...
* Stressors
* Problems with Daily Living
* Support System
I asked my oldest two daughters why it was that these three would be considered an oxymoron in my situation. My oldest hit the nail on the head very quickly and got the answer right. She is 16 and I am rather impressed that she got the answer right as many 16 year olds do not know what the meaning of oxymoron is let alone how to distinguish what would be considered an oxymoron. So her answer: "It is an oxymoron because your stressors and your problems in your daily living are also your support system." And it is true. Think about it. ANY one who has kids should understand this thought. While we love our children they cause parents stress AND they also can cause us problems with our daily living. Get in an argument with them... stress. Have them wreck your car... problems with daily living. Have them talk back to you... stress. Have them exclaim "I am going to go live with......" (you fill in the blank) whenever they are not getting their way... problems with daily living. BUT... the EVERY TIME that we need a support system that will alway be right beside us. That will encourage us to be healthy and well... it will inevitably always be... our kids. That... is why it can be considered an oxymoron. :O) I love my kids and I am so proud of them... even when they are my stressors and my "problems with daily living" and I could never go through this (well, I probably could go through this, but I would never want to go through this) without them being my the biggest part of my support system.
Oh... and just as an FYI... here is the whole list of requirements that St. Vincent's Bariatric Center of Excellence in Carmel, Indiana needs in ones psych eval:
* Brief History
* Stressors
* Problems with Daily Living
* Support System
* Previous Psychological Problems or Treatments
* Depression
* Realistic Expectations and Understanding of Surgery
* Chemical Dependency Issues
* Significant Diagnostic Conditions
* Eating Disorder / Bulimia
* Suicidality
* Abuse Issues
* Ability to Understand Directions and Cooperate
* Psychosis
* Special Needs / Recommendations Before and After Surgery

My psych eval was about the same as yours. He said I was mentally stable to have surgey......I wonder if I am stable in any other aspects hahaha. I am sure you'll be fine. I thought the dr. approved everyone but he was very quick to point out that he denied surgery approval for 2 patients the same week that I had my eval. That made me a little more at ease. Good luck.

Mine was basically like Kenyas...he showed up on Saturday morning to see me in a pair of shorts, beach shoes and a Hawaiian shirt!!! We laughed more than anything and talked about Jimmy Buffett and him questioning my job skills in insurance billing! LOLOLOL

I still love when the psych said I should exercise and take off 50 pounds before surgery. Uhhhh HELLO, if I was doing that successfully I wouldn't be here! I tried not to laugh......wouldn't I skip the whole surgery thing if I could lose the weight without a problem!? I never did understand that.....this was beyond the Dr's expectation of compliance which I had stuck to- and was under my PCP for 6 months monitored. I dunno, she just didn't "get" it.....then she said I needed behavior modification. Uhhhh ya think!? Who gets to be 300+ pounds without bad habits/behaviors!? I went with it all and it was fine, but it didn't make me want to run out and go see another Psych again. (now counselors are fine by me!)

| Well I have had family deaths including a few suicides,And have been through psych stuff with my sister who was one of the suicides (11 years ago) And I spent about a year in therapy after her death. So when I went to my psych eval I pretty much knew what he wanted to hear. I didn't want to be told I couldn't do this surgery because of the rest of my family sheesh. lol.. Its not hard to get by them if you know what they are looking for. I hate to say it that way because some people really need help before and after the surgery but with me I know what my problems are and someone sitting there making that much money an hour to tell me well sorry I just cant deal with that. After a year in therapy I dont think I could be civil anymore so I just sat there and laughed when he wanted me too and answered the way he wanted to hear and he said well I think your ready to go..lol. So dont let the eval scare you just sit there and listen to what they have to say and answer honestly enough to get buy. Remember dont add any information they dont ask for..lol..

It was the only part of the entire process that I consider to have been, for me, a complete and total waste of time. Except for one thing - it was needed to punch a box on my dance card. I went, I BS'ed, I walked out with a positive recommendation. Now the psych my wife is using for her application is another story altogether. I think she is getting her money's worth from a really good practitioner.
So ya' pays yer money and ya' takes yer chances, jest so longs ya' gits yer approval in the end!!

I had an hour consult, then had to answer these questions on 2 tests....there were like 300 questions total....it took them sending the stuff off to be "graded" to make sure I didn't have some hidden agenda....

Wow... VERY interesting. I like this topic. :O) You guys are awesome! I am sure that I will do just fine, but by reading what all of you went through in this area it is helping me to "realistic expectations and understanding of [the] surgery". :O) True that?
