Question OT: DSL or Cable...which do you like?

I am battling with DSLExtreme now, as my internet communication has slowed to a halt and they say it is an AT&T (phone line) thing and they will contact them, yadda yadda blah blah...PLUS they upped my fees by 6 bucks/month!

Anyway, I have made an appt with the cable company for Saturday to install cable internet.

Anyone have any big issues or opinions on DSL vs. Cable?

Bring it on! I need to know!

Thanks and Love,

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

i prefer the cable internet service in terms of the speed HOWEVER the cable company here SUCKS. their customer service is TERRIBLE and they are over priced. i currently have dsl and sometimes it is quite slow but being that i am a stickler for customer service i stick with the dsl.

I agree my cable company sucks and I can not stand them so I have DSL. It is fast enough for what we use it for. Plus for the deal I can not beat it. I am thinking about getting Verizon wireless broadband, even though it cost more I would have the internet any where I go.

i should say i got verizon dsl. i left timewarner cable because the reps are either non english speaking or morons....anywhooo. verizon was having a special. six months free! and free modem thingy...so i got it. besides i like their reps better anyway. and because the dsl rides on their phone line they are quick to fix it. off my soap box now LOL!! (i hate timewarner. they think that because they are the ONLY cable service provider they are the only provider PERIOD...and they are so not!)

Yeah, I hear ya about TimeWarner and their holier-than-thou attitude, but since AT&T began offering digital fiberoptic blah blah and of course the satellite competition, TW has pretty much no choice but to straighten up, customer service wise.

At my work, which is run by a big HMO/PPO provider, with 7 medical clinics, we are constantly attending customer service meetings (one is tonight) because the competition is so fierce.

I've had cable Internet service for close to 3 years. At first I had standard service, and the first time I had a problem (modem power supply), I was told it would be a week before they'd get here. I told them that was unacceptable. I upgraded my service to "business grade", which allows faster downloads, and they guarantee any service calls within 24 hours. I can't get DSL where I live, so it's either cable or dial up. Cable works so much better than dial up. DAVE

I have DSL but have been thinking of cable. Everyone I know loves their cable hook up unless there is an outage. We have been hit with a lot of serious storms here, (70 mph winds, flooding etc.) and it has been taking forever to get things fixed. A friend of mine was hit by lightening and everything got fried. She aslo had her phone service through cable. Well everytime they called on the cell they got put on hold forever and racked up extra charges because the went over their minutes since it was the only phone they were using at the time. When the company finally did come on line they would keep telling them that the service in their area wasn't affected and it must be a problem with thier phones. Finally after a week of calling every day they got someon who actually listened to them and said they would send out a service person. The first appt they could get was a week away. They were able to access their voice mail and when the guy didn't show up, they found out they the cable company called and left a message that they would call before coming and if they didn't get an answer they would not come. DUH!?!!!!
So three weeks later they finally got the problem fixed. They were talking about getting their old phone service back but I think that was going to be another major hassle.

Moral of this story, I guess you are damned if you do and damned if you don't. Slower internet speed or crappy service. The problem is the cable companies have you over a barrel because they are area specific.

The outage situation is my biggest drawback, too. We rely on our DSL for online TV shows when the cable it out. With cable internet, we would be SOL if there were an outage.

Oh, well...the outages are few so I guess I will give it a whirl. I really do hope AT&T cures the line problem before the cable appt. I would like to have the option...ya know?

Thanks to all!
