Unhappy All This Skin

I had my gastric-bypass surgery done last year on Feb the 14th and I have lost a total of 167lbs, and now I haveallthis extra skin and I have a hard time with my bra's, because of all this extra skin an not to mention the belly apron that I carry around on me. It's just that I can't wear short's because of the loose skin on my inner thight's as well. All I have is medicare and medicaid. So if anyone can give me some direction for plastic surgery "Please by all means"! I would be greatful for anyones response. Thank You Joyce Scott

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

it's highly unlikely medicare or medicaid will cover this, but you'll have to meet with a surgeon and get them take pictures and fight the insurance company for you.

Cosmetic surgery is rarely covered by insurance, though I think they should change things, with more and more people opting for bariatric procedures. Would they rather us be healthier and pay for a few procedures....or fund long term illnesses attributed to the previous obesity?

My aunt had the same problems. If the extra skin is causing problems and you can start documenting along with having your doctor write you a letter that it is medically necessary, medicaid will cover to have it removed. They won't do a tummy tuck, but they'll remove the excess. I hope you can get some answers soon. Definitely call and find out what the requirements are for your state.

Congratulations on your wonderful weight loss!
Insurance for PS is difficult, but as others say, check out with a PS surgeon and start documenting the medical problems you have now with extra skin--irritations, infections etc. Someone here had got a breast lift covered because she got very bad back aches from strain on her back muscles due to extra skin.

Awesome weight loss!!! WTG. I even researched donating skin to burn treatment centers with no sucess. I live in N.Y. and also checked the surrounding states....no go. Just a thought maybe out your way the rules may be different. Also, if you Unfortuately have a hernia they will do the skin while they fix the hernia, at least in the cases i have heard about. Take Care. Kathy

joyce - as others have said be sure to get in touch with your primary care physician to start documenting how the extra skin is physically causing problems: rashes, etc... that would need plastic surgery to correct. unfortunately just the inconvenience of loose skin will not be enough. as far as the shorts situation - what i have done is to get a pair of biker pants to wear under my walking shorts. the biker pants help to hold the skin up and more comfortable. the biker pants also help with the stomach apron of skin to hold that more in place.

I have heard of several people getting the apron removed by insurance but not sure if medicare/medicaid will do the same. I think most of us dream of the day to get all the skin removed. Good luck!
