I've always felt that my weight problem was mine to solve and never talked to anyone else except a doctor about it, and even my PCP complains about my unwillingness to discuss it as much as he would like. So tonight I'm going to my first support group meeting and I'm not sure how I'm going to feel about being in a room full of people talking about something I always felt is not a 'public' topic to discuss. Are they going to expect me to say anything?

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Congratulations on going to your first support group. I really think you'll enjoy it. Most support groups do not require u to say anything if you don't want too. Just sitting there and listening to others can be very helpful! Have a great time!

I went to my support group meeting this evening too. They don't require me to say anything. We had a guest speaker tonight.. so we got to listen to his lecture on upcoming programs in our Bariatric center to help promote health and well being. Hope you found yours to be informative and enlightening.

These support groups can be therapeutic in nature--at least they are for me. I can vent any current issues, ask questions of other post ops, and openly discuss my experiences with other people who have the very same interests--success with their RNY experience. I attended these support meetings the first 7 months as a post op, and lost 100 pounds. I stopped attending the meeting, as I thought I'd attained my goal wt. 2 months later, I got on the scale, and noted a 20 pound WT INCREASE. I went back to meetings, lost those 20, and continued on to a total wt loss of 155 pounds. It took a total of 24 months for me. Statistically is has been shown that those post ops who attend support meetings on a regular basis, are the patients that do the BEST from WLS. I just attended one last night, my third one this month. Hope you enjoyed your meeting. DAVE

Support, whether online or at live meetings, are integral to long term success, according to studies on WLS. I am not a fan of our meetings. They seem to be infomercials for whatever guest speakers are attending that night. I get far more support here. It is nice to see "real" people, though.

Last night they had a guest speaker, a man who runs a fitness program every week that costs $10 per week. I don't live in Boise so that's not really feasible for me. Then the people who are post op all introduced themselves and said how much weight they've lost. I'm 43 and I was one of the younger people there, which felt odd. The had some food samples there but I didn't look at them.
