Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Being where I am at on my journey I thought this would be the time to see where my BMI was at, and where it would be when I am at goal. So I started out with a BMI of 48.2 which is extrememly obese, I am at 33.7 which is still obese, and when I am at my goal it will be 26, which is overweight. So I want to know how come in order for me to be "normal" the most I can weigh is 120? I think that if I got to that I would be skin and bones. I want to be able to look and feel heatlhy. I think that if I got to 120 (and my DR agreed with me) I wouldn't look healthy. So if my DR thinks that I should actually be around 139-145 which is still overweight, why can't that be normal? I hope you can understand what I am trying to say. Thank you for your input.

| Super Moderator | If the word "normal" bothers you, think of what is good for you as a "standard". For a person your height (I presume you are not tall, since you say the upper range of normal weight range is 120) if the person never has been seriously overweight, then that would work. What would work for them is the standard for them, what fits you better is the standard for you. So long as you are in your required range for YOU to feel and look healthy, that's your standard, and that can be 145-139 and you can be happy with it. I hope I'm making sense here. ![]()

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | YES i agree it goes by how you feel and look at a weight. I am still considered moderately overweight right now but i think to much more to put me in normal people will tell me i look sick.... SO its hard. SO cool to watch the BMI drop down. I started out at a 51 BMI and im at a 26 BMI right now. KEEP up the great work

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I was just having a chat with a friend of mine yesterday about what is considered "normal" in our society. I opened a magazine up and there was a very beautiful model that was taking about being a "plus" size model. She was a size 12!!! When did a size 12 become a "plus" size model. You can't even find a size 12 in plus size clothing. I think its a shame what our society is putting the girls through. And what does it say for their clothing? That they can't make cute clothes for heavier people? I think its wrong that a size 12 is considered a plus size!!!.. Thanks for letting me vent |

| Super Moderator | BMI came into use as a universal measurment to determine obesity about 15-20 years ago. Before that, various standards were in use, and most of them were severe for shorter persons, and lenient for taller persons, since they were mostly subtractions from height. The determinant of the median, 22, is the ratio where statistically, the longest life span is observed, and the ranges of normal, obeity, and lean were designated in part by the statistically significant differences in the existence of co-morbidities e.g. the increase in health issues that can be associated, or aggravated by obesity. So, the ranges are not arbitrary, but rather, have a definite medical reasoning behind the numbers. Normal range people can expect to have the least health issues, but of course, other factors do come into play. For those of you who have a family background of generally overweightness, then it is likely that you are genetically inclined to be overweight, so your "standard" weight range, where your health issues are minimal, and you feel and look healthy, may be acutally above the "normal" range BMI. Too high, is not good, but just into the overweight range might not be a problem to you who have such a background. So, your goal should be where you are healthy, both physically and mentally/spiritually, and not be bound by the medical definition set by BMI numbers. P.S. As for dress sizes...well, I lived in the US some 40 years ago, and size 12 then is not the same size 12 now...sizes were much smaller then than now, so you need to keep in mind, clothes sizes are relative to the times.
