Default My scale is telling me how to eat!

Is anyone else obsessed with weighing themselves?

I weigh myself almost every morning which I know you are not suppose to do but I can't seem to stop! I think I am so paranoid about going backwards after all I have been thru. I had been stalled for he last 6 months, then I gained about 5 lbs! I will weigh myself in the morning and If I am up a pound or two from the previous day , I cut my intake of calories drastically. Then when I do eat, I feel so guilty about it. I am eating about 1 cup of food when i do eat. Is that too much? I am so confused on how many calories I should be eating and why my weight fluctuates so much. My nutritionist had told me I should be eating about 1500 calories a day. I am eating about 900 a day (sometimes between 500 & 600). You would think I would lose weight or stay the same, not gain. Over this past weekend I was down to 144 lbs and was ecstatic. Two days later I weighed 147! It can't simply be water weight, could it? I have always had a water retention issue and I can't eat alot of salty foods. My doctor always told me that if I lost weight, my fluid retention would go away. NOT! I have just as many issues with it now as I did when I weighed 262 lbs ( and I am not nor ever been hypertensive). I used to take lasix and hydrochlorothiazide but was told that I can't take them anymore since I had weightloss surgery. Is that True? I am so depressed over it and it is consumming my day and I have tis fear in about a year I will have gained all my weight back. Help!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Your BMI is great!! As for the fear of regaining - we all have that. But maybe being that conscientious every day is a good thing, it may be making you crazy but you are on top of it. If you go up a few pounds you know and make changes.
I think we are all the type of people here who are going to have weight issues one way or another for the rest of our lives. It's not like bang, we are fixed. I think most of us will always stress over what we weigh, up or down, what we eat...
Be proud of how far you have come.
And a great big hug for the day to day.

I think you are very normal on how you feel. I think all of us will worry about our weight for the rest of our lives. One thing though, and hopefully Doc will have some answers too, but maybe your body thinks you're starving it and refusing to let go of any more weight because you aren't getting in enough calories in a day for your body to realize that you are not trying to starve it. Just a thought.

I agree with Christy. If you are only eating 900 and some days droppint down to 400-500 then I think you are confusing your body's metabolism and causing it to think you are in starvation mode. I suggest you setup a schedule of what you are going ot eat each day and stick to it. Once you get a regular schedule you should see the pounds start dropping - or at least stablizing.

I've been doing around 1400 cals a day for almost a year and have steadily dropped with only a few stalls lasting 2 weeks. I DO weigh myself every day and I fluctuate 1-2 pounds at the most and that's seldom and only when I'm getting ready to drop another pound. Then I'll stay at the same weight for a week, then a couple of days of bouncing down and back up, then down a pound and back to steady again.

I don't let the scale dictate my diet, I keep to my schedule.

Below 1000 kcals for over a year out is low, 500-600 is way too low. As Christie and Barbie says, you are confusing your body's metabolism.
You probably need 1200-1400 kcals per day at your present stage. Theoretically speaking, 1200 kcals is the maintenance calorie for a woman around 105 lbs or so. So, once your body understands that it will not be deprived, 1200 kcals will still let you lose. Granted, it's going to take time for things to start going that way since your intake has been rather arbitrarty for a while now due to your being scared and then feeling guilty. Your emotional ups and downs will confuse your body, too. If you are feeling truly depressed and stressed, it might be better to consider professional help to get you through this bumpy period.

The first order of the day is to get in the essential nuturients to support life. You need good protein, you need good fat, and you need good carbs. Start off by making a daily menu and sticking to it. If you have a hard time planning your menu, utilise www.fitday.com, www.sparkspeople.com, or any other online nutrition and weight loss sites, these will help give you a handle on how to balance out your food. Barbie has a good eating system, she posted it not so long ago, so that might give you some ideas on how/what to do.

Hydration is also important, and water retention at your present stage may be due to the imbalance of your diet rather than excessive water intake. Are you sure you aren't getting in too much sodium? Getting in the required amount of water with good balanced meals will probably help reduce the water retention and make you feel better.

(((((((HUGS)))))))

I am doing about 1,000-1,300 calories per day. I think you are eating too little for that far out. If you are dropping it way low then increasing....that is probably why your scale is bouncing. You naturally have less volume if you have not consumed much for a few days...then you add more food and go up. Also....what about your water intake? Maybe up the water if you are prone to water retention. I have the same issue. If i eat mexican...or chinese...I feel like a whale for 2 days and refuse to weigh because I am ALWAYS up 1-2 lbs from water weight. I would increase your food and then on days where you feel like you need to do better....add more exersice instead of cutting out calories.

I know exactly what you're going through. I think I'm obsessed with the scale as well. I think the fear of gaining just takes over. I've been at a stall with only losing 1 lb here and there for so long I can't remember actually losing a decent amount. I do notice my inches though, not as much as I'd like but..... what some of the others have said makes sense about the calories. I'll try it. Good luck.

I also weigh myself every morning. But I don't kill myself over it because in my mind I can't believe I can weight 107 one day and 110 the next. Even if you eat a little more one day, you don't gain weight the next. It takes a few days of eating more or I believe we retain liquids for different reasons. I think as long as we stay within a certain range, we shouldn't worry. If it's something that's really worrying you, I think you should speak with a doctor about it. Good luck!!!
