Default So much for keeping this on the DL

I wanted to keep my surgery hush hush. There are some people who will just gossip about it, and heck, they don't need anything else to talk about. Then there are those who would blatantly (sp?) tell me their opinions on it, and I just don't feel like dealing with that. So I decided to keep it to just a close knit few.

However, when I went to the hospital yesterday for my pre-op it seems like I ran into all the people I didn't want to run into. First it was my pastor. That's okay, I know he'll keep it confidential. Then it was a classmate from school who works there and I'll be surprised if she will be discreet. Then we ran into about 20 people from our church who were waiting for a friend to get his gallbladder out. UGH! Seriously. I didn't tell them what exactly I was having surgery for. I just kept answering that it was a procedure. In a few months though they will figure it out and I'm sure the rumors will fly.

I don't want my instructors at college to know because they'll think it's something that could have waited. So I'm still working on keeping it hush hush there. We'll see how that goes since many of them work at the hospital where I'm having the surgery.

Oh, well, let's see how this goes.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

HIPPA - set your mind at ease, everyone you come in contact with in the mediacal setting is required to honor your patient confidentiality.

When I had my surgery last year, I told my manager and close co-workers. After my surgery when other co-workers started to notice my weight loss and asked how I did it, I told them I had bypass surgery. I have found people very supportative. They usually asked a few questions and now it is old news, Very little gossip.

Frankly, I think they had more to gossip about when I was fat and doing nothing to get healthier and they do now that I have done something about it.

Those who will gossip will gossip. Always remember, it's their issue, not yours, so don't let them get control over you.
As for your instructors, if you run into them as a patient, yes, HIPPA (which will in the future go for you, too, when you receive your license) so, if they breach the confidence there, you can lodge a complaint.

Good luck.

Good point about HIPAA. Doc, I already have to live by HIPAA. I work as a nurse tech right now. I get my own patients and am responsible for all of their care except for meds and IV's. So I can't believe I forgot about HIPAA.

Man, I'm so nervous about surgery that I'm freaking out about everything.

that's probably true - you are worried about so much...let this part go. If they talk, they talk. I know you would prefer it didn't happen...
but now you need to be more focused on you and your surgery and how happy and healthy youy will be a year from now...this part will be old news. Good luck!!

I always say " if people have to talk about me, then their lives must be pretty boring!"

Yeah yeah you might be the talk of the town for a day or two but next thing you know there will be someone or something more interesting to talk about.

People will talk the talk but they need to walk in your shoes to be able to walk your walk.

I personally have told everyone that I care about...others have found out along the way. I have been asked...

Why? I answer because it my choice ~ and I want to be healthy!

Have you looked into that type of procedure? ummm yeah I am not going into this blindly!

Do you know how dangerous this is? ummm lets see...having diabetes and high cholesterol is?????

I do have to say most people have supported me 1000000000%
and the way I see it ...if they dont tough sh*t!!

I am doing this for me!!

Good luck with your surgery and with the people around you!

Sheri, I was just thinking the same thing this morning. If they don't like it, then well, too bad. I am having this to keep from having diabetic complications on down the road, as well as for my 4 kids. I'd like to be around to see my great-grandchildren. There are so many reasons why this is what I need to do, but it's going to happen whether or not others agree. My husband and I are fine with this and that's all that matters, really.

HIPAA is great for keeping the staff's pieholes shut, but there is no way to prevent gabbiness from the 25 or so folk you know from seeing you in the hallway of the medical center. LOL

You MUST live in a small town. I don't run into ANYBODY, even in the local grocery!

Like Scott said, I wish you luck with that. The good news is that once it is over, it is over and you don't owe anyone an explanation. Really...you don't.

Hang in there, sister.
