Default My surgery incision is infected AGAIN :(

For some reason my surgeon won't suture or staple my incision up, he wants to use a wound vac to make it heal. It became infected in December and he had to do a debreedment which means all the healing that had been done was 70% undone and I had to start over again.

The nurse who changes the dressing for me discovered a pocket last week that has become larger and it smells septic. I see my surgeon again tomorrow and I'm worried he will want to do another debreedment and put me back on the wound vac. I've been hooked up to this thing for two months. I have yet to sleep in my bed, my back and tailbone are sore from sleeping in my recliner all this time. I don't want to go through this every month and at the rate I keep getting infections I'm afraid this is what is going to happen. Why can't he suture me up?

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Sorry for what your going thru. I am not familar with what you talking about but it doesnt sound like fun.

I had 5 little wounds. And they each had two staples that were removed I think a week or two weeks later. Then I just covered them up with small tiny band aids.

Sorry and hang in there.

Sometimes the wound heals from the outside-in. That is why my surgeon was specific to say NO antibiotic creams or covering of the wound, so it would heal from the inside out. I was told, however, that some, no matter how careful, have problems with the wound care.

I am so sorry you are dealing with this, CSA. I hope it doesn't hurt too much and it gets cleared up soon.

I really wanted the laproscopic surgery but right before my surgery he informed me that the chance of me having that was slim to none. The reason being when I was 8 years old I was in a serious car accident and I had surgery. I had a lot of scar tissue he had to get through to do my wls.

This is a wound vac.

YouTube - Wound Vac Change

except that it's on my abdomen. This video freaks me out because that nurse doesn't have any gloves on.

Hope you heal and feel better soon! My Dad has a wound van on his leg right now and it's been on for a month- he is diabetic. It helps you heel from the inside out, and I know it sucks out the infection- as much as you don't like it I am sure it's helping you heal. I sure hope you can sleep comfortably soon!

I know this is frustrating, but hang in there. The wound vac really is the best way to heal an open wound like yours. I wish more Dr.s would order wound vacs for their patients. Wounds do heal from the inside to the outside. The wound vac pulls you back together while keeping the serous fluid and pus draining out instead of sitting there rotting. (Sorry, I know it's gross)

Have you seen a wound care specialist?

Also, if you're not getting enough protein and other vitamins your tissue will have a harder time healing. Nutrition plays a huge part in making sure your body has what it needs to heal.

If your surgeon just stapled or sutured you then you would continue to have that pocket that just sits and stays infected. It sounds to me like you should be readmitted for IV antibiotics and care. It sounds like your bacteria is resistant to your antibiotic? Have you been tested for MRSA?

I hope I'm not scaring you. I hope you get some solid answers tomorrow, but I think you definetly need to have a wound culture done so that the right antibiotics can be ordered. Otherwise it's a shot in the dark, or a chance that your antibiotic will work or won't.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Everyone keeps saying the wound vac is the best way but how is it the best way when it keeps getting infected? I'm afraid he will admit me back into the hospital and I will be back on IV's and antibiotics that give me yeast infections. I need to sleep but I lay there wondering what's going to happen tomorrow.
