| I had no idea...
... that a wls doctor won't see you if he/she didn't do your surgery. I called a Dr.'s office today to make an appointment for follow up care (and my doc actually worked for the office prior to going where I was) and they told me the insurance is too high to take on someone else's pt. The lady told me to go to the Cleveland clinic (3 1/2-4 hrs away for follow up care?! - I don't think so) or see my primary. So I said 'I am post wls but I can't see a bariatric surgeon for post-op care even though it's because I moved' and she said 'sorry'.
Very discouraging and an FYI for any movers like me. At least in NYS maybe?

wow thats not cool at all. i havent tried but i have never heard of anything like it. very discouraging. the only thing i can say is this, my surgeo doesnt 'do' anything post op in terms fo care anyway. all he did was chart side effects and weigh me and refer me to my primary for prescroptions so i guess in my case it wouldnt be a loss. can you try another? i wonder if its just them.

It does happen. One of the reasons probably is the rising number of bariatric surgery, many surgeons will have their hands full with just following the patients they operated on.
Can you get a referral from your original surgeon since the practice you called was where your surgeon was affiliated with? If he parted with no hard feelings, then they might make an exception to the rule and see you with a referral.

| Wow that sucks, But like doc said sometimes there are ways around it you just have to look for it. They are not going to tell you the loop holes.. Good luck let us know how it goes. So what would happen if you had a stricture or blockage of any kind and needed a scope? Would they take you as an emergency patient or how the heck does that work then?

Yep...I am going through the same thing myself! I use my PCP fopr the 6 month work up and it takes him about 4 months to get my results back to me (UNACCEPTABLE). By the time I get the results back, its time to give again and I dont know if I have any problems! No one is willing to take on the responsibility of me when they didnt do the procedure. My surgeons office is 3 hours away and I just dont want to drive that for results!

Well when I had my surgery 3 years ago, my surgeon never shared wtih me that he had plans shortly after my surgery to GO TO AFRICA on a peace mission. Now I Think thats awsome and great for him to do something like that HOWEVER, the reason I switched doctors in the begining of my journey was that the one that i was going to use worked out of CORI which works out of 2 states and I didnt want that. I made it clear to my surgeon that was one of the reasons I didnt allow that dr to do the surgery bec i knew how important follow up was. Well out of nowhere about 8 mths following my surgery i get a letter he is gone....The good thing is where i had my surgery they required 2 attendings to preform the surgery. The other surgeon is great and he assisted the main on so I still have him if needed. I have not seen him once. I use my primary doctors and my hematologist for labs and vitamin and level checks. If you find a dr that is familiar with wls, and you are healthy and not having any complications then as long as you keep up with him you should be ok. Im not sure how far out you are and if i go look i will loose my post lol.....as said above check with the practice that he was with and see if they can refer you to someone. Good luck..
