| Dilemma #1 - Dining out with co workers.
Went out for lunch with my co workers yesterday. This is the first time I've eaten at a restaurant since my surgery. What a bizarre experience.
First, right after we are seated the server takes our drink orders. I ordered an iced tea with lemon, then stopped him to make sure there would be no sugar in it. He assured me it was sugar free. Then I take a look at the menu. There is no such thing as a bariatric post-op section in the menu. What am I going to order, I finally settle on a cheese burger with no bun. the server asks me how I want my potato prepared. "Mashed" I replied without thinking.
Our drinks arrive. I take two sips of iced tea, then realize that I will be eating soon so I better not drink any more. I watch my co workers guzzling down their drinks without a care to how full their stomachs are getting. About 20 minutes later our food arrives. I look at my plate with the cheese burger and the pile of mashed potatoes covered in gravy and realize that even when I order just a little bit, it's 100 times too much. I start to eat my cheese burger, cutting small bites and chewing thoroughly, while watching everyone else seated at my table polish off huge sandwiches, platters of fried seafood, bowls of pasta and one gentleman had a western omelet that must of had at least three eggs. Everyone finishes eating and I'm still chewing on my cheese burger. I finally stop, put down my knife and fork, and realize I've only eaten about 1/4 of the patty. I dip the spoon into the mashed potatoes and have one taste. Okay I'm full now. I look up at my co workers and they're giving me funny looks. I turn my plate around and say, "See, I did eat something!" They laugh as the server clears away the dishes and I ask him for a to go box and cup for my food and drink. Western omelet guy smiles and says "You have dinner all ready." I smile back and say "And breakfast tomorrow." This gets another laugh from the table.
It could have been worse. One co worker suggested Mexican food, which at 12 weeks out I don't know if I can handle tortillas yet. This place is a run of the mill typical American food casual dining place and there was nothing small on their menu. Since this was a special lunch to celebrate the anniversary of one of my co workers it wasn't like I could tell them I wasn't interested in going.

| I can appreciate it felt weird to you but it sounds great to me I frequently order from the kids menu or just order my to go box with my meal, put away what I know isn't going to be touched and just go with it. I order water to drink, not because I drink it but because people make such a big deal about not drinking ~ you'd think we were aliens LOLOLOL! I loved Mexican food, especially early out. I'd order chicken quesadilla and mostly eat the ckn, cheese and sauce. Also, did well with pintos and maybe a few well crunched chips. Be careful with the tortilla - not our best choice~~~ Wow ~ I was just looking at your stats - you're doing great! Keep up the good work

yep...I am left over queen!!! When ever I ask for a box...my kids go "here she goes...she will eat that 3 or 4 more times!! " I usually can 3-4 meals off 1 entree. I would have eaten...some appetizer, my whole meal, and possibly split a dessert with DH and the kids pre-op! Man times have changed!

You did great! I meet a friend for breakfast every Wednesday morning. I order the Power Protein breakfast - scrambled egg whites, cottage cheese and grilled chicken. I take along 3 one half cup containers and fill them with what I don't eat. I have food for the rest of the day!
I've also been out to eat a bunch of time and I'm amazed every time about the amount of food people put away and how fast it goes down. I used to do that too! Wow. I still have slow myself down when I eat. It still goes down too fast sometimes.

That is the greatest thing about going out to eat its the left overs!!! We are cheap dates for sure If there is a senior menu ask if you can order from that or the kids menu, some places are great they have grilled chicken and exchange the mashed potatoes for 2 helpings of veggies, you're still going to have left overs.....

I've only been out to eat twice and both times I felf rushed by the waiter. I guess they are not used to people eating slow.
Gotta love them left overs. Nice job!

Hi All..
This is my first post to the board. So Hi....
Im schedueld for my surgery in a few weeks.. this topic is one that I am going crazy over.. Im worried about not only going out to eat with friends.. or dealing with eating out. Today at Dinner i chugged a big glass of water... Im not sure how to deal with not chugging beverages.. Im all about the left overs...
Ill look over the other threads and see what I can find..
I have a liquid medicine measuring cup (its one oz) and tried last night to sip on it..was so hard to do.. i have to practice. Maybe I can drink from syringes. I have a few left over from my party last year when i made jello/vodka shooters in plastic syringes..
well see.. march 12 is right around the corner.
JEff

Hi Jeff. Don't fret too much about it. I'm almost 3 months post op now and just starting to eat somewhat solid food again. It's a matter of following the rules even in a situation like eating in a restaurant.
