Default Toothache

Hey everyone, today I am miserable. I have been putting up with a sore tooth for awhile off and on for a couple of months, but now all of a sudden it is really bad. I am hoping that it isn't absessed to the point of them not fixing it. I think part of it may be aggravated by the fact that I might have a sinus infection, but I am sure that the tooth itself needs work. I am pretty good at handling pain for the most part, but tooth pain is another matter all together. I go to the doctor today to see if I have a sinus infection, but don't get to see the dentist until tomorrow. This sucks.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Awwww
I hate toothaches.
Have you tried cooling your cheek/jaw with a cold pack or ice? It should help numb the pain, and reduce the inflammation.
I hope you get it fixed in a jiffy.

Well, I guess that I don't have a sinus infection after all, just pure tooth pain. Right now I am alternating between orajel and ibuprofen. I know that I will probably need at least a root canal, cuz as painful as it is, it feels like it may be absessed. I have had this problem a couple of times before. This is the first time that I have any kind of dental insurance though. There are times that I just think that I should have them all pulled and be done with it all. My teeth were never very great, but after childbirth, they went downhill very quickly. I hope that they don't continue down that path after surgery. I did buy some caramel flavored calcium chews last night, and they are pretty yummy. I didn't go to the gym today, but I somehow think that this qualifies as a reason to skip.

Hey I know that ibuprofen post-op is a big no no, and someone mentioned it being a no no right before op, but does anyone remember the specifics? Also when I went to the dentist the tooth was really abscessed badly and I had to go for a root canal to attempt saving it. My dentist put me on antibiotics, and I was wondering if that may cause my surgery to be postponed also? Maybe this would be a good question for you Doc. Thanks for the hugs and the prayers, it is feeling a little better now that most of it is drained, but I won't be able to complete the root canal until Monday so I am not looking towards a very happy weekend. I will try to take my mind off of the pain, by posting and hanging out here in the meantime. Thanks again.

Well glad your feeling better. I think the best person to talk to about being on the antbiotics and the ibuprofen question would be your surgeon. PLEASE call them and find out their guideline. SORRY you have to endure the rest of the root canal again on MONDAY.

Janae,
I hope you're feeling better this morning.

When is your next visit to your dentist? I don't think your dentist will keep you on antibiotics for more than a week, two at the longest, so, with your WLS date still a month away, it shouldn't be an issue. It's best you get your teeth fixed pre-op, since there's going to be issues with calcium uptake (so post ops take Ca suppliments), and if you have bad teeth, it could get worse post op.

As for pain killers, the reason NSAIDs are considered off limits for WLS post ops is because most of them are known to be a cause of stomach ulcers due to the damage it does to the stomach membranes. WLSers are more suceptible than non-ops because the scar area--the place where your staple line is, and the anastmoses to the small intestine--are weaker than the untouched surface. Depending on your surgeon, though, you will be allowed to take some once or twice, or a day or two, if it's the best choice in controlling whatever situation needs to be controlled. You will have to ask your surgeon, though, in such cases, and permission may also depend on how far out you are post op--the longer out you are, the tougher your new pouch will be, so, less chance of getting upset on a pill or two. In anycase, even if other drs reccomend NSAID, be sure to ask your surgeon if it's OK.

Take care, I hope your weekend will turn out fine.

I am glad to hear that the antibiotics shouldn't push back my scheduled date, and as miserable as it is to have this to deal with right now, you are right, God is blessing me with having to deal with it pre-op instead of post. I am trying to limit the amount of ibuprofen that I am taking to manage the pain, and it does seem to be improving. Now I just need to get rid of the swelling factor so I feel up to myself. I hate this cuz it never seems to fail, just as I get into a good routine with my work out, something always happens. As soon as I am better I promise I will be back in the gym, but for now I just don't want the blood pumping to my tooth area any more than it already is. I am supposed to be getting an endoscopy done soon so hopefully the results are good from that and all systems are still go. Isn't it a good idea for me to start the calcium and Princess chewables before surgery? After I had my kids, my teeth seem to be falling to pieces, and I am better at brushing them than before I had my kids. (not to sound gross or anything)

I got the rest of my root canal done this afternoon. I am glad to have that over with. Ya wanna hear something funny though? Leave it to me to be one of the only people that actually have a bizarre reaction to the penicilin that my dentist prescribed. My eyes turned bloodshot and red. They burned and itched and were really watery. When I asked my dentist about it, he called the pharmacist. The pharmacist had never heard of that happening, but told him he would check it out for me. Then he called him back and said sure enough in the misc. section was listed the possibility of red burning eyes. He said that it seemed to be rare though and prescribed me a different antibiotic. I don't really see why I have to fall apart like this right before surgery, but hopefull that means that I won't fall apart afterwards. I guess that it will help me put the pain post op in perspective. I have gone through all this pain just to try to save a tooth, I can go through the pain of surgery in order to start fixing my life. Just thought I would share, cuz I was bored and noticed that not very many people are talking lately.

Good to hear you're on the mending track.
Red burning eyes? Hmmm, when I think what allergic reactions constitute, yes, I guess there's a possibility it will turn out that way.
Just be sure your surgeon knows of this episode, so he won't ever prescribe penicillin. Hate to think what kind of reaction you may have the second time around.
