Default How do you really feel?

I watch a lot of shows about people that have lost a lot of weight due to various methods. A small percentage of them have pretty severe image issues. They have them to a degree that they are ruining their relationships and they appear to be unable to be happy.

What happens? I know weight loss isn't the answer to everything, but in the very least, they should feel healthier and feel like they have more access to life. I can understand how some people, especially people that have been obese their whole lives, feel like they are looking into the mirror at a stranger. I am sure that is a very strange feeling. But, I have noticed some people on these shows really start getting into attention seeking behavior and appear to revolve their life around other people's acceptance. Is this normal or are these people pre-disposed to this behavior simply because of personality type or is it leftover self-esteem issues from their previous weight?

I know there isn't one right answer, but I would like to peer into the thoughts of others and hear about emotions they may have felt on their journeys.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

i think its normal. but there are extremes in every direction. if you just look on here for ex there are plenty who crave attention, others who are not at all realistic about what they look like. others who still feel fat and hide. i think its mental and has a lot to do with your mental state prior to surgery. totally depends on the individual. true in deed you gain health from this but some ppl are not completely honest about WHY they're having the surgery to begin with, so it all comes out in the end. there are so many variables...LOL!

Holy crow everyone... its Dr Phil or Oprah incognito. Its a corperate spy.
K ... my answer to this marvelous post is...
I forget that i look different. All the time. I walk by stores i have never set foot in, admiring the clothing int he window and totally forget that i CAN go in there now. I hold up clothing in "old" stores and think ' that will never fit' when its actually 4-8 sizes to big .
Personally I blend now. I look like everyone else. I almost ALMOST mourn my loss of individuality. Nah not really.
Really, aside of physical activity I still have the same "oh well" attitude i have always had. I never had an issue 'picking up' therefore its no different now. A dog is a dog no matter what size you are. Just now i need to have more chewy toys in my back pocket when i go out...."if i throw this stick, will you chase that instead? Puleese?"

I look in the mirror and I see me. Fat or thin, I see the same person. If you were to show me a pic of me, I would never say, "That is the fat me" or "That is the thin me"...I would say, "I was about 48 here" or "Beth (DD) was about 7 or 8 when this was taken". It was the same when I was at max weight. I only know/knew of myself as being morbidly obese, or now "just" overweight, from the number on the scale, not the additional adipose in the image.

I do not regard my image as anything but "me". Others do (boy, do they!) but I don't. I have no reason nor excuse, if one was needed.

Television IS attention-seeking behavior. There is little "real" about reality shows. The vast majority of us here would make for boring TV. So they go out of their way to find the extremes of behavior, then they "educate" the public about what WLS is "really" like. So we get people freaking out when we tell them our plans to have our guts rerouted. <sigh>

Normal behavior is undramatic. Don't expect to see much of it on the boob tube!

What a great question!!! In my humble opinion, this is a multi-faceted journey which is largely mental. Hopefully, if a person has these types of issues, the psych will catch it when they go for their eval and have the person work thru their issues while doing all the preliminaries for surgery. I have my share of issues which you will see in my posts while I continue to wrap my brain around my new look and adjust to the person who keeps looking back at me when I look in the mirror ~~~ ever see a dog or cat see their image in a mirror and not realize it's themselves and start having a hissy fit? LOL My reactions arent that strong but I do still have an odd fascination with changes.

I think the above stated comments pretty much hits what I was thinking. As for myself I am still somewhat suprised when I see current pictures of myself but now I identify with those more then I identify with the before pictures. (That has taken a while though)

this is a very complex question for me. while i can't say that i had issues with my self esteem when over weight i was not at all happy with how i looked or felt. do i feel more confident now? in some ways yes, and in some ways no. am i happier now ~ ABSOLUTELY because i am feeling better, eating healthier, getting more exercise-ABLE to get more exercise, have abundant stamina etc....

A couple of months ago some people on this board mentioned that the people around them changed.

Those they once thought of as friends didnt associate with them as much and that had an affect on the people who lost the weight.

We analyzed the pants of that but in the end you are the same person inside but with increased confidence and ability to do things, better and longer.

Personally I see all the changes as being positive including loss of any shallow friendships (although I have not personally experienced this).

... and I fully agree that from the posts I have seen here over the last 4 months, I think we would be pretty hard up to come up with a single candidate for the Jerry Springfield show.
