Default POPCORN has protein...?

I just read this on another board and had to bring it hear to share with everyone. PERSONALLY i ate popcorn twice and it hurt in my tummy badly so i havent tried it again. I proly ate to much in my portion but read on folks:
Popcorn, I keep hearing has zero nutritional value...hmm, interesting.

Here's what I've discovered about popcorn:

Gram for gram, popcorn has 3 times as much lutein as eggs (much of the western world is deficient in lutein). Only 6 brain-feeding carbs per cup (popped) and gives you a gram of fiber (great for bowel and colon health), and has nearly as much protein as an egg (gram for gram - 8 grams/1 cup popped popcorn has .96 grams of protein, 9 grams of egg has 1.16 grams of protein). It also has more folate/folic acid than egg.

So IF your doc/nut allows it- it is not non-nutrititive....in moderation!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

wow, that is interesting. I did hear from someone at a support group meeting that popcorn is not the smartest thing to eat due to the whole physical properties of it going down, not due to nutrition, but if you can succeed safely and in moderation, rock on. Thanks for sharing that.

You know, Craig's a popcorn grazer.

Food has multiple nutrition in them.
For instance, rice, considered a carb food, actually has protein and fat in it as well (I don't have data for it on hand right now.)

Corn (maize), Protein 10%, fat 4.3%, and carb 73.4% -- don't add up to 100%? The rest is water. (As listed in a medical textbook I have on my desk) Of course, when it's processed, the balance will change.
It's the butter and carmel and whatever you add to the popcorn that makes it high calorie, I guess.

It pays to check out the nutrients in the food you eat.
Utilize fitday, or other online sites like the one I posted in

Hey is it true doc that rice and beans together make a whole protein, or summin like that? I remember hearing that somewhere, something like that is how vegetarians get their protein a lot of the time. Just wondering, feel free to correct me.

Well, soy is bean and it's considered protein food, not carb. (Think, tofu)
Yes, Buddhist vegetarians get their protein mainly from beans, esp soy in this here parts.
Ethnicity plays a big part in what kinds of food you can utilize well, which accounts for why with the the same life style, certain ethnic groups get sick...type 2 diabetes etc...while other groups fare better.
Asians are better at utilizing the protein in crops, but don't do well with lipids and meat. People of European ancestry are the opposite., though this is a rough definition, just to give you the idea.

Default Popcorn Freak...

Okay...If I've been "bad" on my bypass diet, it's been my freaky addiction to popcorn! I have it nearly every day and, even though I have promised my nutritionist to limit it to 3 times a week and 1 cup max at a time, I have had a tough time keeping to that promise. I can chew popcorn right down to mush (- really -- just the parts that get stuck between your teeth!) It is my only vice and I have rationalized it by telling myself that it is good fiber.

For Those Of You Love To Eat Rice And Can Tollerate It You Should Try Brown Rice Which Is Much Healthier. I Love It!!!! Dont Know If I Will Be Able To Tollerate It After 6 Months Out Of Surgery But If I Can Have Rice I Would Def Have The Brown Over The White.

I eat popcorn almost every day! Have since early out. I try to get the smartfood low fat cheese popcorn which has even more protein due to the cheese! Otherwise i use natural lite popcorn and love it.. Never bothers me.

My husband is the popcorn addict!!! When we go to the movies, he'll eat a large bucket all by himself. He's never had a weight issue either!! (Grumble) I do enjoy a little bit at the movies and sometimes for a snack, but I generally eat the very low fat microwave kind. I still love crunchy food!!! Amy
