Talking Church lady

Peanut and I have been aware for as long as we've known this one lady at church that she, of all the folks there, would benefit from RNY, but how to tell someone that? Didn't have to. She came to us yesterday.

We've made it no secret how we both lost weight. Anyone who would feign interest for more than a second or two learns more about WLS than they probably cared to. So last week when her doctor told this woman that it was decision time (drop weight or drop dead), she thought of us. Cornered us yesterday afternoon in the foyer as we were moving towards the door and asked us about it. From the emotion in her voice and face, it was plain to see that she was scared of the prospects either way - dying heavy or dying trying.

We talked with her for a half-hour or so. Her husband even acknowledged that he would be willing to eat the way she would have to (which wouldn't hurt him one bit, either!!) She asked us for our recommendation, so we gave her our doc's name and info and she was going to check it with her PCP. There were a few times when what one of us was saying hit close to home for her and you could see it answered a fear.

I think she's going to decide to go through with it now. She's afraid of dropping dead getting out of her recliner.

I kept it a close secret when I had mine and for about 8 months after, then I told the world. Peanut advertised her upcoming surgery, but she had me as a success story they couldn't scare her with. This lady remembered and knew who to ask when the time came.

I think there is virtue in us telling the world about WLS, once we get to a comfortable place with it. I didn't want all the static, so I kept mum until I reached goal. Peanut had me running interference, so she advertised. As a result, we may help save a life.

There are worse ways to spend a Sunday afternoon!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I'm with you there CT. I only told a few people before I had the surgery because of the negative comments I would get/got. Now, I'll tell anyone who will listen, and I'm only about 8 months out. I actually now have a cousin in CT who's thinking about LB, and I told her to make sure she did her homework before she made her final decision. I also told her I originally wanted the LB, but the more I read, I changed my mind. (Man, am I glad I changed my mind). I also gave her this site for info .

CT, there are definitely much worse ways to spend a Sunday afternoon, but I'll choose that Sunday afternoon that you had any time.

Now that is wonderful news and I know it made you feel great. I love talking to anyone that will listen. I relate with you Dixie that I believe Bill gets so tired of hearing about it all of the time.

Ct you are going to have all of your town on a WL plan before you know it. I pray the church lady goes through with it.

...it's the darn cream of mushroom soup casserole and other church basement meals! Honestly, I have NEVER understood (even when i was a REALLY unhealthy eater) why we eat so poorly (especially at church )when our bodies ae supposed to be the the temple of the Holy Spirit. I guess it's about quantity, not quality.
When there is something healthy at a potluck, it goes quickly.
I will pray for the "church lady" that the Lord will guide her down the path that is correct for her. We have ALL been there..the desperation and soul searching.
Hugs.

I may open cans of stuff in some of my cooking, but NEVER soup!! <gag> When we have a potluck, I always know there'll be at least one healthy dish there, 'cause that's the one we brought! And it usually goes before similar dishes with a more dubious ingredient list ... I'll sometimes make a crockpot of chili, stew or some other meal in a pot, and it goes quickly. Even the kids who can't see into the pot like it!! Quantity and quality!

At the Thanksgiving feast last year at church, I brought the SF candied yams (recipe's in the Recipes forum.) When I said it was sugar-free and diabetic friendly, you should have seen them flock to it. Mine were long gone and the regular full-sweet version was leftover at the end.

CT and Peanut,
You're a blessing!

I met my husband in 2002 during one of my weight loss periods. One of his friends was morbidly obese and diabetic and was trying to get the surgery but they were saying he was too high risk and wouldn't do it. That man has now been deceased for several years. Should he have tried harder to get the surgery? In retrospect - YES. I just wonder if he had had someone to encourage him if he would still be alive today.
