Some basics about nutrition.
At this stage (less than a year out) the total cals you are able to get in probably is around 1000 or so. (Please note, I said you are able to get in, not, you should get in, there's a difference here.)
You need to get your protein in first, and that should be 60-80 grams, depending on what your surgeon says. This will take up 240-320 kcal of the total. Then, you should try to get veggies in, as they are rich in vitamins, and some kinds of minerals. Carbs come after that, but all in all, you probably will end up getting around 100g carbs, which actually isn't that bad. (Though a lot of people will say, avoid carbs, you do need carbs for the brain cells, so cutting them off totally is not good. However, you need to cut out as much processed carbs as you can--that is, cut out as much refined sugar, or things that include refined sugar, as you can, and get the carbs through complex carbs--the ones that are called good carbs.)
As for fat, avoid trans fats as much as you can, but the amount of fats to take, is the total, and not broken down. With a 1000 kcal well balanced intake, fat will probably be around 25g.
I wrote this article for maintenance diet balance, but How Many Calories Do I Need? may provide you with some info and understanding of balancing out your nutrition.
Hope this helps.
| I've been counting mine on FITDAY...and I seem to avg. about a 1000 kcal a day...100 carbs.... I'm trying to focus in getting in my protein b/c I've slacked...I get about 50-60g. Water I'm not so good. But get about 50 oz. a day...and fill up with hot tea too. About Carbs...yes they turn into sugar essentially...but not fat. It's sugar...but not as if you have eaten refined sugar. Try to stick to whole grains...think "brown" - and stay away from anything white or bleached. (basically any wht. bread, sugar, potatoes, rice, pasta...etc. If you still want bread...eat multigrain...same w/ pasta. With rice use brown rice...and with potatoes choose sweet...or something like that.) Hope this helps....

we talking on a good day or a bad day? were i am i have both.
I am totally behaving this week because i know i have to!!!!!!
2 days going strong on great eating! yeah me
ON A GOOD DAY:
80 grams of protein...
do not count calories
do not count fat
carbs i keep at about 45
water: 64 ounces
multi vitamin
biotin
calicum chews
vitamin B complex
FOR me when i am bad with carbs is the day that my head
obsesses on food and i cant stop grazing. ONCE i go two weeks
of reall strict lo carbs (atkins induction levels) i add them back in
with nuts, fruites and veggies. RIGHT now im undoing the evil
holiday eating things that i had and getting things back in my control.
probably once im in control again i will average higher. ONCE on track
usually only have carbs early in my day....and then i know weight
will start comeing off for me which is my goal...i am on the higher swing
of my weight swing and i want to be back at the lo end! ILL be there in 2 weeks
of eating right and back on track. IM determined the holidays freaked me....

| If you are eating 800...it should be no more than 80g. (just about 10% of your calories.) I've been looking at other lo-carb diets...and they vary btween 20 & 30g a day. But...don't worry yourself too much...just be healthy... You are right. There are carbs in soooo much, but if you stay away from processed foods...you will see there are significantly less.

eating meals that consist of 10 grams or less of carbs!
AND i do use that NET carb counting were if something has
fiber i take that from the carbs all those atkins rules impounded
in my brain.
I mostly eat protein and things with barely carbs...i dont eat bread, pasta
and potatoes when im behaving and right now thats what im aiming for. NO rice...no oatmeal....no chips ...no popcorn.... no pretzels nothing. EVEN one 100 calorie bag of popcorn stems me to graze out of control. I am a carb addict and know this is the only way to behave I stick to 3 meals and protein snacks as a carb addict they just put me in bad habits...usually few days on track i no longer want the stuff and thats what i need right now big time. LIKE deb said i dont drink regular milk and i dont do 3 shakes in a day never. I was told i need to use my pouch and it has to learn and know how to break down food. THE most i do is one in a day , My protein puddings i use the stallones have 1 carb! EVERYTHING is very carb conscious. MOST protein bars wont go near my mouth i use one with 9 net carbs ....everything is choosen with my carb counts in mind, i proly spend more time counting them and keeping them out of my diet then protein.

| Carbs and fats Part 1
Don't overstress or obsess about carbs. I am thinking that I'm seeing a bit of this going around right now, no offense but, kinda seems contageous.
Carbs do not equal sugar in the sense of refined sugar. Chemically speaking, they are a group of substances that have at their core a certain amount of atoms-- carbon, oxygen and hydrogen-- combined in a certain way, and there are tons of stuff that belong in this group, from the simplest such as glucose, to starch, glycogen (which is the form glucose is stored in in our body) and cellulose (which is the major component of fibers which we need for digestion and smooth poo passage).
They are essential as our source of energy, and they are also essential components of our body, just as protein and fat are.
Even if you think that you are not taking any major carbohydrate food, you very likely will be getting carbs from stuff that you aren't even aware of. Like veggies. As I said, cellulose is a carb, and veggies that have a lot of fiber will be high in those. Don't even think of cutting these out, you need them, and you need the other nutrients veggies have.
It is refined sugar, sugar that is already in the simplest form that are, if not glucose, then in a form that is very easly broken down to glucose, that causes a lot of trouble. In two ways. One, it hits the blood stream fast, will go up to a certain level, and like other chemicals, may act as a "soother" to certain receptor cells in your brain. (This is known to exist) Call it sugar addiction if you will. Two, the simpler carbs take less energy to break down. In other words, complex carbohydrates are work themselves, before they can be broken down to a form that is easily burned, they use a lot of energy to break down to that form. The end math is, less left over to become excess sugar.
