| I need to Vent
Ok my son has been home sick all week with a fever, cough, vomiting, headache, sore throat etc etc. Anyway last night I get home from work and he has gotten much worse so I decide to take him to the ER cause he is really burning up. I get there and the place is packed. It takes an hour to see the nurse to asses him and we go back and sit to wait. Well there are people in there that have been there since 100pm (its now 700pm) so I figured I had time to run and buy a bottle of water to drink while we waited. I left Zach sitting there (he is 13) just in case. I get back and he is gone. Everyone in the waiting room was like they called him back as soon as you left. So I go to the nurses station and they tell me they don't have him in the back. So I figured they gave him some meds for his fever while we waited cause it was 104 degrees. I go to the waiting room and sit down and wait a few minutes and I ask some of the people around me if they ever seen him come back out and no one had seen him come back out from the back. SO I go back and tell them that a 13 yr old boy who is 5'8 doesn't just disappear. And they tell me again they don't have him. So I tell them to call the police and then they decide to start looking for him. In the mean time I call my hubby who is pissed off at the hospital and decides to come to the ER. About the time he gets there the nurse who gave him the meds for the fever finally says OH he is in room 6 laying down and forgot to change his status on the board. Man it took everything in me not to slap her. I understand that they are busy but he is still a child. OK i'm done venting I think. I just couldn't believe it. On the positive side they took him ahead of about 20 other people so we were out of there by 930 pm. And there was still people in the waiting room that were there when we got there!!
Am I justified in being a little pissed off?

Ahhhh Brenda If I were you I will be all over the place!!!! You had a great control on the situation! Thank God that your son was alright!
Yes I know what you mean about the ER they sometimes drive me nuts even when they're not over loaded!
I'm very happy that things went alright at the end. May your dear son recover soon.
Best wishes.

Brenda, I sure can relate to what you just went through with your son. Except, in my case, it was my wife, Jess. She is currently in the hospital and while there, she got a very very bad viral flu. I MEAN BAD. SHE COULDN'T KEEP NOTHIN DOWN, BURNING TUMMY, BURNING THROAT. The nastiest flu I have ever seen. Lots of people have it, I guess, and it lasts anywhere from 2 to 8 days. She is feeling a little better as of yesturday. THANK GOD. Anyways, one time, she couldn't make it to the bathroom, and barfed into her hand. Well, while she was doing that, the nurse walked in and accused her of sticking her fingers down her throat to make herself puke just for the attention because they just got a new admit. NO LIE, THIS IS TRUE! She told her that she is 35 yrs. old, and to grow up. She called me just crying. BOY, OH BOY, DID I GET ON THAT PHONE. The nurse that said it was still on duty. I read her a line, and she got the biggest ear full she must have ever heard. Most people would have had to cover there ears because what I yelled at her was not very nice, and not for virgin ears. lol I didn't swear at her for the record. It just was not very nice. In the end, I told her to stay out of my wife's face, and don't bother her the rest of the night, unless she needs something. I also told her that if I hear she ever does something like that again, she will be getting harrassment charges filed against her. I was going to file a complaint with the hospital the next day, but the wife begged me not to. She said that she would just make it harder on her in a different way if I did. I will do anything for the wife, so I didn't. The wife doesn't know it, but this is far from over. When she gets out, I will be checking into what I can do. She hasn't had that nurse since, and I am praying she doesn't, for her sake. At the end of the conversation, she had the gaul to tell my wife, while I was still talking to her to tell my wife that she upset me, meaning Jess. A few more words were said by me once again. Finally, she said to me that she was going to end this conversation, and hung up on me. So, Brenda, in a different form, I can relate to you with some of the mishaps of hospital care. I am glad though, that he was in a room, and not something worse. I HOPE ZACH IS FEELING BETTER NOW. I have a Zachary to. lol He will be 13 in April. lol

mike, I wouldn't be surprised if the hospital already has a ton of complaints against that nurse. It's probable the hospital is keeping her out of the way of your wife. No excuse for a nurse to behave like that, if she can't tell between true distress and a faked one, she doesn't deserve her nurse's license.

Brenda and Mike,
I'm so sorry you had such bad experiences with hospitals. I was a neonatal nurse for 30 yrs. and there is no excuse for what happened. If the ER nurse didn't have time to change board than she should at least let other staff know where your son was.
And the floor nurse may have been having bad day but you never show that to patients.
Please do file complaints. Hospitals need to know. And let your Drs. know. They have a way of letting hospital staff know they're not pleased.
Take care,

Bren, you really kept your cool under the circumstances. Hope Zach is feeling better now. I agree with Lisa, it's a good sign that you came here to vent instead of turning to food!

Thanks guys, I'm home at lunch checking up on him and he isn't feeling much better. The doc said he had a viral infection that could last anywhere from 3 to 8 days. He is on his 4 day so I hope soon he is feeling better. Still running a high fever and just sleeps most of the time. Between hubby and me one of us is home every few hours to check on him.
He is also still not holding down much of anything. Between the worry of him being sick and the ER losing him it has been very stressful.
Thanks for the support its much better than food!!
