Default Large Fatty Tumor Removal On My Back

Sooo..... Since I have lost 27 lbs I have noticed on my back a large mass that is over my left shoulder blade. It kinda contours like my shoulder blade bone does so its kinda hard to notice.

I went to my doc and she said due to the size of it I need to see a plastic surgeon for its removal and will likely have a large scar as a result. She felt it up and all around it and said it just feels like a fatty deposit. (lipoma)

Has anyone else ever had one of these removed via surgery by a plastic surgeon? When I called the plastic surgeons office to make my appointment, they indicated there may be several options for its removal including liposuction, steroid injections or surgery.

You can kind of see it in my side view of my progression pics on my profile. Compare the preop profile view to the 21 day comparison profile view that was taken with the right side visible. There is a definite rounding of my left shoulder blade that isn't there on the right side.

If you have had one removed, what method was used?

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I had an adipose lipoma removed from my shoulder joint on the front. Many times they leave them if they aren't causing problems, but mine looked about like an egg and was right at the joint so waiting wasn't really an option. I just went to a general surgeon who did it in the office where my pcp is.I have a relatively thin white scar just a little longer than an inch.

Good luck, I didn't know that there were other options, otherwise I may have gone to a plastic surgeon.

Sounds like it should be removed ultimately, due to where it is. Plastic surgeons are the best choice because they can reconstruct so it won't hinder your movement and make the scar less noticeable as well. Now, I said ultimately, because you are still very early in your losing stage, and as you lose more, you will have more loose skin. So, waiting until you're at goal weight, is another option to consider. In any case, it's best to have it examined directly by a PS and talk everything over.

Thank you for the replies. Do you think I will have sagging skin on my back? Goodness I hope not! Does that happen?

How much loose skin depends on the person, so you really can't say what until then.
When I said waiting is an option, I took into considereation the possibility that you may want some PS work done in the future, in which case the cost be covered in part by insurance if you have medical neccessity to have the lipoma removed. The PS would know better about these things, though.

Neezy,
Where you have loose skin depends on where you are carrying the most fat right now. In my case, I carried the bulk of it on my butt and upper legs so that's wher my worst loose skin was. The skin on my back doesn't sag, LOL that's about the only place that doesn't sag, but then I'm older too and that plays a part as well.

If you are carrying the worst of your weight on your torso (big boobs and lots of back fat) then yes, you could end up with saggy skin hanging over your bra strap in back. There's a plastic surgery that's called an upper body lift where they make the incision at the bra line and pull up/down to smooth out the back. That surgery would probably be perfect for getting at the fat deposit on your shoulder.

Very few insurance companies will pay for any cosmetic procedures, but a lot of them have a clause about paying for medically necessary procedures. So if your doctor's say you need to get this removed, then wait until you have lost all you can, and then do this procedure along with what the plastic surgeon reccommends and you'll ge the inurance company to pay part, or maybe even all!!, of the costs.
