Question How much time off from work after surgery?

Hi everyone, I just have on question. How much time off from work is usually needed once you have gastric bypass surgery. At this time I'm in the process of having the 6 month monitered diet with my primary dr. My last appointment is 3/7/11. Which I'm being told my dr. will submit the paper work to the insurance to get approval to see the surgeon. I'm planning ahead. Is 1 week to soon to be back at work after surgery? Or will I need more time?

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I work at a Steel Mill and lift 30 to 75 lbs. regularly, so I took 2 full months off to heal as good as I can.....I am worried about going back and getting a hernia or worse, so I will pace myself as much as I can....I can tell you my experience is that I do not have the stregnth I once had....Good luck to ya, Dana

I took 2 weeks off. I didn't feel good the next weekend but got through it. What kind of work do you do?

croman17,
I'm 3 weeks post op (tomorrow). I went back after 2 weeks, 4 hours a day for 2 days then full time.
I felt great after surgery and basically HAD to get back to work, I was going crazy sitting at home. We're all different so your body will let you know when it's time to go back, or rather, when it's not ready!
I asked my doctor on discharge day if feeling so good was normal. His reponse.......alot of it is attitude! Stay positive

I did the same thing as "EmmasNana" - I went back after 2 weeks because I was going crazy sitting at home. I worked 2 half days then 3 regular days that week. Today was my 1st day back full-time but I came home at lunch because I was soooo nauseated! Each person has their own feeling about how long to be off.

I had planned for two weeks off but I needed 3 1/2 weeks and then I was really, really tired. My doctor said one week and I'd be good to go back. His nurse said two weeks. So, I scheduled off for two weeks but needed more time and took off until I had my first follow up appointment.

I took 2 weeks. I had no problems with surgery or anything g else. The first 2 days I was tired went to bed by 7...I'm a retail manager so I walk around all day and rarely sit. Feeling fine now..back to normal..everyone is different..prepare everyone for the longest times when you go back early it's a bonus!

I had surgery Jan. 13 and was back to work after 1 week. I was going crazy sitting at home too, haha. I do a simple desk job that does not require lifting, so it worked for me. I think it all depends on what you do at work and how you feel. Some go back after a week, some take a lot longer. I would suggest planning for like 6 weeks, just in case...but then going back when you feel ready! Hope that helps and best of luck to you!!
