Help!!!! I need someone help me to give my head a shake. *chuckles*
One of the things I've been hearing from the social worker and the nutritionist at the bariatric clinic is that I'm being too hard on myself, and concentrating too much on comparing myself to others. I had my four month anniversary last Friday and I've been fighting with a plateau for about four weeks even though I work out five days a week at the gym. When the scale wasn't moving I at least had my measurements to help me judge where the changes were happening and in fact reassure myself that there WAS changes when the scales didn't move. I'd dropped 55 1/2 inches in three months. Between last month and this one (month 3 to month 4) I only dropped a few inches.
My first reaction was total panic! Worried that I'd screwed up somehow...worried that I was failing at this whole journey. Instead of being pleased I'd dropped a few more inches all I could think about was it wasn't enough...wasn't NEARLY good enough.
*smacks head on table* I think I'm doing well... I think I am. but I don't KNOW I'm doing well. If that makes any sense. My brain can say all the right things, but my heart and soul don't believe it.
How can I stop beating myself with such a big stick everytime I see a number?????
AAAAAARRRRGGGGGGGG
Shelley
OH... and PS... how do I get those really cool funky versions of my name that I see so many people have in their signatures? Those graphics are so cool!

You are doing really well IMO. I hope I am doing that well in 4 months. Mar 14th will be 3 months and I've lost less than 50 lb. That is okay though. I am not as saggy as I thought I'd be, I can walk and breath without my heart feeling like it is popping out of my chest. I just played dance central with my daughter/son for about an hour and while I won't jump (top floor) I did get a work out. I like my walks better right now though, no jumping and not as much jiggling. When I get further out there I'll have less to jiggle. The point is, I am able to do more thing than I've been able to do for a long time. Quite focusing on what you haven't been able to loose and focus on what you are able to do that you weren't before. I remember my first big achievement was going to the bathroom without turning into a pretzel. I let everyone know about it too. You'd be surprised how many people felt the same way!

You're paying your medical support team an awful lot of money for their expertise. You expect them to know what they're talking about, don't you? SO TRUST THEM ALREADY!!! If they say that in their expert opinions, you are doing well, what is your expertise to tell yourself different??

First off.
(And this is the third time today I'm posting this, there's an epidemic going on )
The standard losing curve is half of your excess weight in the first 6 months, the next quarter in the next 6 months, and the last quarter over a year and half to two years form surgery.
You're WAAAAY ahead of schedule.
So, of course your doing fine, in fact, you're doing super duper well |

WOW you are doing better than I was at that point. I stalled alllll the time. At first I was dropping 4 to 5 lbs a week. I thought "this is great...now this is what Im talking about" didnt last. After the initial shock my body got from surgery/less calories, I would lose a lb here and a lb there. I once stalled for 6 weeks. I thought I was done. Give it time. I think the more you stress the harder it is for your body to lose. BTW...good job on exercising! I think that is fabulous!

Thank you SO much. All of your replies have really helped. I do focus too much on the numbers...though it can be hard when everyone wants to know how you are doing and it's always "so how much have you lost now?" or "How many inches are you down?". Progress seems easier to measure with numbers than with the other t hings but it's the other things, like discovering I actually have a collarbone I can see *laughs*, that are the neato moments. Thanks for reminding me about that!
Doc... kept repeating it....somehow I've never heard that stat about the weight loss pattern. Either that or I heard but it never sunk in!!!! I'm so glad you took the point to say it yet again. *laughs*

Doc,
That is because you have a bunch of 4-8 months people hitting this time I know that my weight has really S L O W E D down, but I am prepared for it. Not only because from reading here and the other WLS Veterans.
I keep following the rules and take this time to really work out at the gym and pump some weights and grow some muscle. I know that "genetics" has a lot to do with loose skin, but for a 47 year old who has lost well over 106 lbs, I have very little loose skin... But I am doing some serious weight lifting (One of the reason I have some "bulky arms") the waist and hips and legs are nice and narrow and toned. No complaints from me!
That is why I put my "goal" at what I did. I was honestly kinda surprised I have already lost as much as I have with the serious muscle building and gym workouts. But I am now down to a size 14 and feel great.
Just keep following the "rules" and eat what you are supposed to... (I try to eat really low carb, but I DID splurge and have fun at a local Sushi/Sashimi house and I had a bit of tempura yams and sweet potatoes and my favorite Miso soup. Heaven!)
During these "slow" times, measure yourself, compare photos from the last months and take pictures of your PRE surgery clothes and what you wear now!
Warmly,
