Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I need some advice. Why is all my pain meds going through my system so fast. I am on vitakin for my tooth because its geting pulled on friday. I took the damn pill at 730, the pain went away for not even 90 minutes, now im in pain again. What the heck, any idea why its not lasting at least 6 hours?

| Super Moderator | Because your system is shortcutted. It is absorbed faster, hits the blood stream faster, so will be excreted from your system faster. Also, the fatty tissue that you used to have helped in retaining some of the medication, and that isn't there any more, either. You'll need to be careful, because if you need the meds at shorter intervals, you may be courting trouble. However, if the pain is eased with half a pill, ask your dr is you can divide the pill in half, and take them at shorter intervals.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I have talked to several doctors about this and the truth is they don't know why meds don't work as well. I have twice left the hospital on antibiotics only to end up back in the hospital with a horrible infection, needing IV antibiotics. Part of the problem is the area that is bypassed is where we absorb most of our medication. The same thing happens with alcohol, it goes into our system fast but is gone just as fast! I noticed the pain meds after my lower body lift, I was in HORRIFIC pain, and had to take 2 percocet every 3 hours (as prescribed by my doctor), but just a couple of years before my WLS I had had 3 c-sections and recovering from them I had 1 percocet every 6-8 hours, and that did the trick. You may need to find a different medication, or a medication that is given differently, like in an injection, inhaled or in a patch. For my migraines I have the up the nose, injections and one the melts under your tongue and they all work better than the ones I take orally. After my lower body lift is when I started asking questions about absorption and medication. I have been told that they are currently doing studies on this, if that is helpful at all. Hopefully you can get some pain relief, soon.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Jessica I think that Doc is right. Vicodine is in tablet form probally with a score on the pill. AKA the little line that runs down the middle of it. If your Docs office is not opened when you read this try it once and see if it helps. Thats the reason the line is there in case you needed to half it. I would do as DOC suggested. You will be getting the same med the same strength during that 6 hours but Slower than all at once. I havent even thought about meds doing this. This will be a issue I will have to bring up to my Dr about meds I currently take for pain. And Lisa you saying the Extended Relase is not a good thing for WLS patients is good to know. Once I thought about this, it does make sense. Your body absorbs it faster thus getting rid of it faster. I learned somthing new today. Thanks. Let us know Jessica if that helped. I need to learn all this. Thanks |
