| Tolerance I hope WLS has made me accepting and tolerant of others- regardless of their differences. Size, shape, disability, disfigurement, age, whatever. Yesterday I tromped off to the mall for a new warm winter coat. Being thinner makes me feel so much colder now. And NJ is getting snow. I head to Macy's. I don't usually shop there, but being thinner, more confident and feeling upbeat... I am off to buy a coat I can wear to college (work) as well as other times to look...sharp. I must say I did score a lovely sweater for $13.00. Great neckline..and a size L(no longer an XL.)Any way I make my wayup to coats. I tell the saleswoman, I wanted something warm but not really "poofy". The coat dept is HUGE. She says to me"And what size are you? Hmmm?!?" I said I thought I would be 14 or 16 (since I was in a 3X last year I was glowing.) She said "Wow I doubt we hatave anything that big..and look at those long arms...Hmm" I couldn't believe it. She said"you can look around, but I don't think you will find anything that fits you." She wasn't busy, I was the only one there... no help? None!I tried some coats on... that did fit me..but my heart wasn't in it and I left. The sales woman was "no" skinny minny either and also tall, like me. I just did't get her. But I know this may happen again, and I hope it reinforces a lesson to me: to be acceptive and gracious to everyone my life may touch in even the slightest measure. Ok, thanks for reading this. I think I feel better now. I told DH this and he did really try to listen... but he isn't into buying a coat at Macy's.

how rude!!! I remember going to Neiman Marcus with a couple friends (we're talking 20 years ago) because one had to buy a dress for a funeral - the sales clerk looked at us like we were trash... we were grad students - she assumed we were too 'poor' to be able to afford anything and pretty much told us so!
My guess is the clerk was projecting her own insecurities on to you - not a good thing, but she probably feels poorly about herself too

Hm. I could say that people in general are just stoopid....that wouldn't help you much I'm afraid. I think the bigger issue is that customer service has gone to heck in this country and with the economy the way it is, it surprises me that companies aren't paying better attention. Gone are the days that you can go in and get some real help from an educated (in their field) person. I'm sorry this happened to you. You've worked hard and should feel great about your progress. This last bit of weight for us is going to be a struggle- try not to let ignorant folks add to your stress about it.

There will always be ignorant people wherever you go, as well as people who are a bit racist towards obese people. You went to Macy's at an average size and she spoke to you like that. Imagine if you had gone in the size you used to be. She would have had you in tears, God knows what she would have said then. I would have left as well. What goes around comes around and due the fact she was no barbie herself, she'll eventually have a taste of her own medicine, if she hasn't had it yet.
I agree, stay sweet and humble. No need to get down to the lever of people who are insensitive and not at all understanding towards the feelings of others.
By the way...from a 3X to about a 14...that's awesome!

I am glad you didn't buy a coat there with the way she treated you. But knowing me I would of bought one even if it was real snugg on me just to "show her"! And taken it back the next day when she was not working!lol You can go to Macy's web site and complain to the company on how she treated you. Did you get her name? if not still complain about it, the store manager needs to be more aware of how his/her employies are treating the customers, if she did this to you she has done it to other people.

What a witch! I agree with Nursesrock about customer service in this country. It just gets worse and worse. At least you can protest with your wallet and refuse to leave any money in that store. I also think you should complain as Sara5214 suggested.

I'm sorry that the ignorant sales gal got to you PW, I wish you would have gotten a coat there, really there was no excuse for her to say those things. Did you get one somewhere else? You have done so well, I'm proud of you!!

I would have filed a complaint. My kids cringe when I say that... BUT... These people are there to help, at least thats what they're paid for. If the person doesn't do their job someone else will more than happily take it from them. I say if you want to keep your job do it right. Treat people with respect and you (normally) get it in return. I'm glad you didn't buy the coat. I wouldn't have bought the sweater either. Customer service is a big deal to me. I don't mean to sound like a B**** but I'm spending my hard earned money in the establishment and I expect to be helped and talked to politely. That's the way I treat people so expect it in return.

Aww PW you know how hard you've worked to get where you are now. Don't let someone elses ignorance bring you down. She wasn't raised right and she certainly wasn't trained right. Unfortunate for Macy's as she's going to drive customers away. I always talk with a manager and let them know they have "opportunities" to provide better customer service.
