Default Ignorant "friend" incident, grrrrr

A "friend" on facebook sent me an instant message asking how I was doing. I responded, and then shortly thereafter the conversation turned into a self-righteous rant on how she is able to lose weight on her own "the normal way" (she's taking an OTC diet pill, I wouldnt consider that "normal"), and I am weak for taking the easy way out.

I responded with something like, "If you think getting major surgery and having my insides rewired for life, will have to monitor my protein/fluid intake carefully for the rest of my life, saying goodbye to sugar, soda and some other foods I loved forever, and take numerous vitamins religiously an easy way out then I guess you are right."

She made me so dang mad! Who is she to tell me IM taking the easy way out and she's taking a diet pill???? Obviously she's the ignorant one and should've done some research before she opened her big mouth. Thankfully, the battery on my laptop died, but right before it did, it seemed like she finally realized how offended I got and began to back peddle. She never apologized though...and she really should have.

Grrr.....

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

On the brighter side, though, she'll still be chasing fad diets and taking expensive pills to shrink her bank account long after you're at goal and living life to the fullest! Let her indulge her ignorant fantasies - it must be a lonely life when you have to tear someone else down to make yourself feel good!

You know you did the right thing, and you did it for you, not her. Let it run off your back like water off a duck! She only has the power to irritate you if you give it to her.

We all know what you're going through and we're here for you any time you want a real friend!!

I agree with Perfesser.
I haven't been through that particular incident as of yet, but before I had my surgery, I had several friends try to talk me out of it. I was CONSTANTLY hearing "You don't need it, you are fine the way you are." I finally got tired of hearing it and retorted with, "If I don't need it then my doctor wouldn't have referred me to the surgeon, the surgeon wouldn't have agreed to it AND my insurance company wouldn't have approved it! So, YES I do need it."
I'm just waiting to hear that I took the "easy way out" I'm gonna let it fly then. People just don't have a clue!!
You know your reasons for doing it, YOU know your struggles beforehand and afterwards. Don't let people get to you. We are here for you, those of us that understand!!!

If this is a friendship you want to keep then you should come right out and let her know you were offended by what she said and that it hurt your feelings and you think she owes you an apology. If the friendship isn't one you care to continue then try to let it go and move on. You know you did what you needed to do. It's not like you did it for the enjoyment of the experience (ugh) but for your health and yes your happiness. You have the right to be both healthy and happy. True friends should be supportive.

On my bariatric packet, and the waivers I had to sign. It stated all of the risks that could happen to me after surgery/ just getting the surgery and then the final part to that was "not losing weight, by not working to lose the weight." Any weight you lose is your loss...not the surgery''s. You and I both know that if we don't eat the right things, or work out that scale is not going to move. Anybody who thinks weight loss surgery is easy, hasn't truly worked for something to save their life. Punch a pillow and pretend it's her head lol jk

We, hubby and I, have discussed what we would say if asked and we still don't have an answer we're comfortable with. I LOVE your reponse and support it whole heartedly. I have not had any questions yet but I know they're coming. Thanks for sharing your experience.

P.S. I love this place!!

First of all, the surgery is a tool not a magic wand that allows us to be thin overnight. We have to work hard to reach our goals. She's not doing it on her own as she claims, she too is using a tool called a pill. Let her rant and rave how she's better because she's not choosing the easy way out, I know from experience she'll eventually gain it all back. So don't sweat it and take her comments with a grain of salt. Be proud of what you have done as well as what you have accomplished so far.

Some people just don't get it. Some people don't WANT to get it. She sounds like one of those. Just tell her that if a pill worked we would all be taking pills. Unfortunately, they don't. She will be going back up the scale while you are still going down. That is the best revenge.
