Default Support Group issues

Big changes are ahead for my support group and I am bummed.
The program (hospital sponsored) originally offered us 8 support groups a month (in addition to nutrition classes, counseling etc.)
We each paid for this program. We also had services of a fantastic bariatric certified nurse who had been there 28 years and worked with over 1500 patients.

Now the hosptial is canning the program. I think it is a money thing.
THey changed it to 2 support groups a month.
Next I learn they have purchased a new phsyicians' group who agreed to come on board if they brought their bariatric nurse. So ours has decided to leave (as she was actually being demoted.)
And, support group is now once a month! All the nutritionists are gone. A few months back a few of us decided to offer peer support groups (for which we were trained.) We now offer 3 a month and for one of them we had to find our own meeting place.
I can't believe the hospital doesn't value our ..."health". I also hear the new bariatric nurse coming on, had RNY a few years back and has regained 80 pounds.
I feel like we are being abandoned. It really stinks. Plus, we PAID for this!!!!! .
Now I should feel better;( I got to vent..) right? Not yet.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

That is just not fair. Let them know how you all feel. I don't have any support group close to me but I do have my family here. Good luck getting this all worked out.

Hang in there! Sure sounds like it stinks! I have not been to the "in person" support. I have always been very embarassed about my situation for one...and for two, we aren't that big of a city and since my hub works for the city and we all HAVE to go to the same place I don't really want to go with others from his...uhm, profession...all I have is you fine folks and my surgeon's office. Which my surgeon totally rocks!

You totally know what to do and you have here...do you find that you need an in person place?

my surgeon has one meeting a month - there's an information session before it then a support group - we pay for this program too (in fact, my hubby needs to bring my check to the office tomorrow - have to pay the fee before my surgery on Tuesday). I've been to one support group meeting - they had a dietitian there who focuses on people who have had WLS - she too has had the surgery.

I'm sorry the hospital is making such drastic changes to your program.

Wow PW, that is a lot of change and probably a shock and huge disappointment! It does seem really unfair to the nurse you all loved and a lack of respect to all the paying patients for not having thought how it would affect you! I'm glad that you have the peer groups going to keep some semblance of unity.
The NP I loved and who also led our support group resigned a couple of months ago and I was devastated. I've since met the new NP and I like her a lot yet she'll never quite take the place of the other NP.
I'm glad you feel a bit better after venting and if you need to do some more we are here for you friend. Hugs

We attended a kind of a rag-tag support group in a town 30 miles from us for awhile. The leader was good, and a few of the members were committed to the rules, but it was mainly a social group. There were some ... shall we say ... interesting ... people in that group also, like the husband who had skipped Protein 101 and lost an awful lot of muscle mass and his wife who was in the process of significant regain. (I mean, who comes to a WLS support group and orders a large full-strength Coke with her meal??)

When it folded, we saved a lot of gas money and didn't miss it one bit. I have RR and Peanut has me. What more could we want??

We are happy to be your support group, PW. But that does stink. I think you should ask for your money back! My surgeon has a once-a-month group that I have never felt was worth my time. So I just jump on RR a few times a day for my support fix.

Im sorry your are losing the best part of your support group. I have two options in my area and both of them meet when Im at work. I did attend one of them once as a pre surgical requirement and it ended up being a bad experience. Like perfessor, this is my support group. I get everything I need from my hubby (who had surgery 5 months before I did and understands whats going on) and this site. With that said, I do hope it works out for you though.

That stinks, sorry to hear that, you get into a fine routine and bam things change!
My program is fairly new, actually last spring Dr Ballem started here in Clinton, NJ...we are expanding to two meetings a month, one for nutrician one for psychological changes, also we are adding an endocrinologist, a clothing swap, a fashion show, and a cook off, I am very happy our little program is getting bigger, if you arent that far, we would love for you to join us.

My weight loss clinic has a meeting once a month which is free to anyone interested in coming. I've only been twice in a year's time mostly because I was too heavy to move and walk prior to surgery. I plan on attending this month. There is a brief session with the nurses and dietician at the beginning and sometimes cooking! Then a gab session if you want. I think it stinks that they have cut back on your group. Maybe the local hospital would offer you a meeting room for free if you agree to clean up afterwards? Isn't fitness a goal of the medical profession?
