| Made it through my class tonight
I did go to class tonight - I sat through about 90% of it - only getting up when I had to point something out on the screen - I don't have a laser pointer (tonight was the first night I've used the overhead projector!)
I was tired at the end of it - but my DH stayed on campus so he was there in case I needed to leave early. My older daughter brought her math homework and stayed in the classroom with me (I asked her to).
I was self conscious with the marks on my hands, bruises on my arms and the bruises, scabs and abrasions on my neck (from the central line), but I just pushed through it and presented all of my material. I left feeling like they had a much better understanding of the basic principles of probability.
I was a little annoyed that I pushed myself to be there and about 15 of them didn't bother to be there!

Tricia, unless you looked like a professional bull rider who needs to find another line of work - FAST! - I doubt your students even noticed your medical damage. You were there, that was enough for them.
The two items I find indispensable are a laser pointer and a remote presenter that lets me move forward and backwards in my PP slides from anywhere in the room. As a matter of fact, my remote has a laser built in! I roam around the room, over by the display cases, up by the screen, walking around behind those who need a bit of refocusing ... Any more, I couldn't teach without them!
I gave a test in my freshman class on Tuesday. Today 25% of the students didn't show up. As I was recording the test scores this afternoon, I found that the lowest scores were from those guys who skipped today (and have lousy attendance anyway! ) One of those guys came to the test without his calculator and asked me if I had one he could use!! I enjoy this class immensely, but there are some in it who make me wonder ...
Anyone who has taught any length of time knows what we're talking about!
Glad you were able to survive. My surgery was two weeks before the new semester started. I was there at the start of class and made all my lectures, but I went home at noon for a couple of weeks and did some world-class power napping! Take care of yourself!!

Good for you, Tricia. You really put some effort in to get up and teach this early. I don't think I could have done it this soon.

I really enjoy teaching and I enjoy my students.
I teach all 4 quarters of the year, the only time I have more than a week off is over Christmas - so there really isn't a 'good time' to have surgery requiring time off. My office manager for my full time job asked me how I was going to manage my class since I'm not back to that job yet and I explained how I was going to do it - I'm sure she was a little miffed, but 2 hour vs 8 hours is a big difference, know what I mean?

Tell her the two hours went well, so you can use that to work up to the demands of a full-time presence. Or negotiate coming back half-days for awhile to get back into the swing of things. The one thing you do NOT want to do is overstrain just as you're starting to feel better.
Take care!

CT | I originally planned on going back on Monday the 13th - but I've pushed it to the 15th to give me a couple more days
I'm feeling good today
